V. 20 Practitioners Died after Being Released in Critical Condition

Below is what happened to 15 of them.

1. Ms. Zheng Fangying

Ms. Zheng Fangying, a 54-year-old Falun Gong practitioner from Weifang, went to Tiananmen Square to unfurl a banner on December 2nd, 2001. The policemen who beat her damaged her internal organs.

After being on a hunger strike for 18 days and dying, she was released and sent to the railway station. When she arrived home, her family saw that her lower abdomen was bruised, and signs of injury covered her whole body. She died three days later.

2. Mr. Yang Weidong

Mr. Yang Weidong, 54, was the director of a medical clinic at the Changshan Fort and a retired army colonel and a clerk at the Weifang City Institute of Drug Control. He was known for his honesty. He used to have many ailments including severe heart disease, severe bronchitis, and gall bladder problems. All of them were cured through his practice of Falun Gong.

Mr. Yang went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong on November 19th, 1999. He was detained in Chengnan Police Station in Weifang City on November 23rd and later sentenced to 15 days of detention in Weifang City Detention Centre.

His health deteriorated in detention. After that, his work unit jailed him in the Mental Health Department of Weifang District Rehabilitation Hospital and assigned guards to monitor him and forbade him from doing the Falun Gong exercises. After a few days, the doctors saw that he was dying, so the hospital called his family to take him home.

He died on December 25th, 1999, 6 days after his release.

3. Mr. Chu Guilin

Mr. Chu Guilin, 56, was arrested on October 11th, 2005, for sharing information regarding the persecution of Falun Gong. He was sentenced to forced labour in Wangcun Forced Labour Camp. He was released on December 26th, 2006, in critical condition, as a result of being tortured. He died six days later.

4. Ms. Sun Yuqiu

Ms. Sun Yuqiu, 58, was a resident of Jitai Township, Shouguang City. She, her husband, and about a hundred Falun Gong practitioners were arrested and detained in a government building of the township on December 22nd, 1999, because several local practitioners had gone to Beijing to appeal and were arrested.

During the three days she was detained, she was beaten, forced to watch her daughter handcuffed and paraded in the streets, and had 2,000 yuan1 extorted from her. Shortly after she was released, she went into a coma and died nine days later.

5. Ms. Liu Shuhua

Ms. Liu Shuhua, 48, was sentenced to forced labour three times. She was tortured with being made to stand for a long time, sleep deprivation, sexual abuse, beatings, and injections with nerve damaging drugs causing severe mental damage. She died on January 25th, 2013, on her 48th birthday, leaving behind two young children.

6. Mr. Wang Jihua

Mr. Wang Jihua, 40, a resident of Tishui Village in the Mizhou District, Zhucheng City, Weifang City, was sentenced to forced labour in Wangcun Forced Labour Camp in Zibo City.

Several days later, the village party secretary told his wife, Li Lianghua, that her husband was sent to Zibo City No. 148 Hospital. When she found him in the hospital, he was in a vegetative state.

He was very pale, with dried blood in his hair, new and old injuries on his head, and a few bruises on his forehead. She asked the doctors and the police how a healthy man could have ended up in this condition, but no one answered her. Mr. Wang was taken home in a coma on April 20th, 2002, and died on February 25th, 2004, at the age of 40.

7. Mr. Ma Yunwu

Mr. Ma Yunwu, 70, a retired teacher of No. 1 High School of Qinzhou City, was arrested and detained in Qinzhou Detention Centre in 2000 when Mr. Ma and his wife went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong.

A month later, he was sentenced to forced labour in Changle Forced Labour Camp. After being repeatedly tortured, he was given medical parole and died at home in 2004.

8. Mr. Wang Yixin

Mr. Wang Yixin, 67, was a resident of Guojia Village West Township, Fangzi District, Weifang City. He was arrested by Song Changchun, deputy party secretary of the township, and the police on June 30th, 2006. He was tortured in the compound of the township roadway administration for 40 days. He was released only after he was severely injured and died at home about a month after his release, at the age of 67.

9. Ms. Guo Ruixue

Ms. Guo Ruixue, 50, a resident of Dongnanjie Village Anqiu Township, Anqiu City in Weifang, was arrested for passing out Falun Gong flyers.

She was detained and shocked with electric batons resulting in incontinence, as well as blistering to her face and hands.

She was released when she was in critical condition and died in Anqiu City People's Hospital in the summer of 2001.

10. Mr. Jiang Bingren

Mr. Jiang Bingren, about 70, was retired. He lived in Nanzai Village, Nanhe Township Changle County, Weifang City. After he went to appeal for Falun Gong in Beijing in 2001, he was sentenced to three years of forced labour, but managed to leave the labour camp 2 months later.

In January 2002, he was arrested again and detained for over 70 days. He was paraded in the streets by the authorities and severely beaten. He never recovered and died in July of the same year.

11. Mr. Shi Fafu

Mr. Shi Fafu, 66, resident of Mengwa Village Duchang Street Office Changyi City in Weifang, was arrested by officers from the Duchang Street police station and had 10,000 yuan extorted from him. He was taken to the Wangcun Forced Labour Camp in Zibo City on July 4th, 2006, and died there on November 14th, 2006.

12. Mr. Zhang Wenliang

Mr. Zhang Wenliang, a resident of Dongying Village Jingzhi Township Anqiu City, was arrested multiple times and sentenced to prison and forced labour. He was sentenced to four years by a court in Kunming City.

After he was released, Qingdao City Police Department sent him to a forced labour camp for a year and a half. He died on December 6th, 2008, at the age of 37.

13. Mr. Man Shouzheng

A Falun Gong practitioner from Jianguo Community Zhucheng City, Mr. Man Shouzheng was arrested by the authorities of Zhucheng City, led by Mao Yulong from the Domestic Security Division.

While detained in the brainwashing centre, Mr. Man was beaten by Mao and others and tied to a tiger bench2. The authorities hit his head against the wall and kicked him in the head with their boots. After several days of torture, he was taken to Zhucheng City Detention Centre for a month and then sent to the Wangcun Forced Labour Camp on May 12th, 2009, for a year.

The forced labour camp released him ahead of time because of his poor health. When he was sent home, his family found that he couldn't talk nor eat, and threw up liquid. He died on December 3rd, 2010, at the age of 63.

14. Ms. Liu Qingmei

Ms. Liu Qingmei, a resident of Daxiepo Village, Shidui Township, Anqiu City, was sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment in 2003 by a local court. The prison refused to admit her due to her high blood pressure.

In 2008, she was jailed in Shandong Province Women's Prison and tortured by being stripped naked and handcuffed in the corridors to be exposed to the inmates and guards. She became mentally disordered and developed partial paralysis (incapable of walking), high blood pressure, and kidney failure.

She died on September 3rd, 2013, in Anqiu Hospital, at the age of 54.

15. Mr. Zhao Yancheng

Mr. Zhao Yancheng, 74, a resident of Qiaoxi Village, Qiaoguan Township, Changle County, Weifang City, was sentenced to three years of forced labour in October 2000. He was sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment in October 2009, but the prison refused to accept him due to his medical condition. The local authorities continued to persecute him and harass his family until he died on March 21st, 2014.

VI. 54 Practitioners Died Due to the Toll of Long-Term Persecution

Below is a partial list of the total 54 cases.

1. Mr. Li Haishan

Li Haishan, 61 and a resident of Zhucheng City, Weifang City, was arrested by authorities led by Mao Yulong from the Domestic Security Division on February 25th, 2004. He was interrogated and tortured in a temporary detention centre, where he was shackled and had his hands cuffed behind his back. He was restrained in an iron chair and beaten.

He was released after his family paid 4,000 yuan, but he couldn't recover from his injuries and suffered severe weight loss. He died during the 2005 Chinese New Year holidays.

2. and 3. Mr. Hao Shouzhong and His Wife, Ms. Chen Ruixue

Mr. Hao Shouzhong, 83 and retired, and his wife, Ms. Chen Ruixue, 70, were both residents of Qianjizhuang Village, Hanting Township, Weifang City. The couple started practising Falun Gong in September 1997 and became very healthy.

They appealed for Falun Gong in Beijing a few times after the persecution started in 1999, and were arrested and imprisoned multiple times. After they were released, the local authorities continued to harass them. Ms. Chen died on December 22nd, 2002, at the age of 70. Mr. Hao died two years later at the age of 83.

4. Ms. Song Jinfang

Ms. Song Jinfang, a resident of Songjia Village, Nanliu Township (formerly in Anqiu City), Fangzi District, Weifang City, was arrested for appealing for Falun Gong in Beijing on December 16th, 2000.

She was jailed and fined 5,000 yuan. Her poor family didn't have the money, so the authorities ransacked her house and confiscated their grain and tractor. She went on a hunger strike to protest the unjust detention, and was brutally force-fed and beaten. The authorities continued to harass her and threatened her family after she was released, until she died on November 30th, 2002, at the age of 36.

5. Mr. Li Guangdong

Mr. Li Guangdong, 65, a resident of Zhangqiao Village, Luocheng Township, Shouguang City, Weifang City, had a happy and harmonious family of eight, who all practised Falun Gong.

In April 2000, most of the family was detained in the township government building for 5 days and nights, leaving the 7-year-old granddaughter on her own at home. His two elder sons, their wives, and younger son were jailed in Shouguang City Beiluo Mental Hospital for three months that same year.

Later, his elder son, Mr. Li Yiming, was sentenced to 12 years and his younger son, Mr. Li Yichang, to 8 years in prison. Suffering from the hardships of life under harassment from local authorities and extremely worried about his two sons, Mr. Li Guangdong died in June 2004.

6. and 7. Mr. Guo Huiming and His Wife, Ms. Cui Zhimin

Mr. Guo Huiming, 72, and his wife, Ms. Cui Zhimin, 66, were residents of Ze'erzhuang village, Beiyuan Street Office, Weifang City. After their three sons appealed for Falun Gong in Beijing, the family was frequently harassed and threatened, and their home ransacked by the local authorities.

Worry about his son's whereabouts for many years took its toll on Mr. Guo. He died on February 11th, 2003. His wife died a year later.

8. Mr. Han Zhaohui

Mr. Han Zhaohui appealed for Falun Gong in December 1999, and was arrested and had 4,050 yuan extorted from him. After that, the authorities put him under surveillance and harassed him regularly. In 2001, they threatened him, and he was forced to leave home to avoid further persecution.

He died on July 23rd, 2001, at the age of 65.

9. Mr. Wang Shuying

Mr. Wang Shuying, 73, a retired government official in Changyi City, Weifang City, was arrested and detained multiple times after the persecution of Falun Gong started in 1999. The director of the local police station and local party secretary threatened him on February 4th, 2002, seven days before the 2002 Chinese New Year. He was so upset that he became sick and had great difficulty eating and drinking. He died on February 22nd, 2002.

10. Mr. Zhang Baiyong

Mr. Zhang Baiyong, a Changyi City Huaqiao Garment Factory employee, went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong twice. He was arrested, beaten, and fined several thousand yuan. He was once tied to a tree to be baked under the sun for about 8 hours.

He died on March 17th, 2005, at the age of only 42.

11. Ms. Ma Yuying

Ms. Ma Yuying, 60 and a retired teacher, was a resident of Zhucheng City. She appealed for Falun Gong in 2000. The local authorities believed she had organized other practitioners to go to Beijing, so they arrested her and videotaped a meeting criticizing her at the auditorium of Zhucheng City Foreign Trade Company.

The authorities played the video on the local TV station many times. She was also subjected to detention and had 8,000 yuan extorted from her. She died in April 2003.

12. Ms. Li Chunhong

Ms. Li Chunhong, 71, lived with her son in Anqiu City. The authorities arrested her son and daughter-in-law on the night of July 20th, 1999. Her son was later sentenced to four years in prison and her daughter-in-law to three years of forced labour.

With no income and also worried about her son and daughter-in-law, she died on December 12th, 2001.

13. Ms. Li Huiling

Ms. Li Huiling, 39, a resident of Changyi City, Weifang City, was arrested, detained and beaten multiple times after she appealed for Falun Gong. She died on October 28th, 2004.

14. Mr. Jiang Yimin

Mr. Jiang Yimin, 60, a resident of Jiangjia Village, Jitai Township, Shouguang City, was detained and tortured in Jitai Township Judicial Office for 20 days in 2001. He died on August 15th, 2003.

15. Ms. Ji Xiiulan

A resident of Zhoutiange Village, Jiage Street Office, Anqiu City, Weifang City, Ms. Ji Xiulan went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong three times. Her husband was sentenced to forced labour in July 2000, leaving her and their three young children on their own.

Ms. Ji suffered a lot of stress from frequent harassment by local police officers and had 40,000 yuan extorted from the family. She died in May 2003.

16. Ms. Niu Guilan

A staff member of Atuo Township Hospital in Changle County, Ms. Niu Guilan was arrested more than 10 times and was held in brainwashing sessions multiple times. Her family had nearly 30,000 yuan extorted from them by party secretary Yu Limin and Gao Lide of Atuo Township and leaders of the hospital. She died on July 18th, 2005.

17. Ms. Wei Peixiu

Ms. Wei Peixiu, 67 and retired from Huayu Corporation Limited in Changyi City, was arrested and beaten by Yang Lizhi, the director of the Political and Legal Affairs Committee of Liutong Township, and Wang Ruibo, deputy director of Liutong Township. She was forced to kneel on bricks and had 5,000 yuan extorted from her. She died on September 1st, 2005.

18. Ms. Zhang Zhihui

Ms. Zhang Zhihui, 43, was a resident of Lijiazhuangzi Village, Longdu Street Office, Zhucheng City in Weifang. She went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong on October 1st, 2000.

After she returned home, the local authorities detained her five times within a span of seven months. In December 2004, she was arrested again by Xu Guangrong, a local police officer, and tortured in a detention centre until she began to vomit blood. She died on October 21st, 2005.

19. Ms. Liu Shuhong

Ms. Liu Shuhong, a resident of Hualongqiao Village, Hualong Township, Shouguang City, was detained multiple times since July 1999. In March 2001, she was arrested at home and tortured in the township government building until she lost consciousness.

When she woke up at home after her release, she was mentally disordered and later died on July 20th, 2005, at the young age of 35.

20. Ms. Li Yuxiang

Ms. Li Yuxiang, who lived in Wulibao Residential Compound of Zhucheng City Foreign Trade Company, had been to Beijing four times to explain the truth. She was detained and tortured multiple times.

Those involved in her arrest were local authorities including Cao Jinhui, Wang Zonghe, and Wang Wei, all from the police department of Zhucheng City.

Her family was fined 15,600 yuan. She was sentenced to forced labor twice, where her health severely deteriorated. She died on January 25th, 2005, at the age of 49.

Note

1. "Yuan" is the Chinese currency; 500 yuan is equal to the average monthly income of an urban worker in China.

2. "Tiger Bench": Prisoners are forced to sit on a small iron bench that is approximately 20 cm (6 inches) tall with their knees tied together. With their hands tied behind their backs or sometimes placed on their knees, they are forced to sit straight up and look straight ahead without movement for long periods of time.
