“The advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people” (The Universal Declaration of Human Rights – Preamble)

My sister, Zhu Baolian, started practising Falun Gong in 1994. She followed the teachings of Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance, the principles of the universe, in her everyday life. She gave up smoking and drinking and changed into a much better person, both at home and at work.

On July 20th 1999, the Chinese Government banned Falun Gong and started a campaign of brutal persecution against this peaceful practice. Baolian lost her job several times because her employers were instructed by the government not to employ Falun Gong practitioners.

On 15th December 2000, Baolian was arrested by undercover police in Beijing when she was giving out Falun Gong leaflets. It took my family a long time to find out that she was detained at the police station of Chaoyang District in Beijing. The police did not allow anyone to visit Baolian unless she signed a repentance statement. Baolian refused.

After 8 months at the police station, they put Baolian on a “show trial” without informing my family and gave her a four-year sentence. My elder sisters and my father, who is over seventy years old, went to see Baolian before she was put in Beijing Female Prison.

This proved too much for my elderly father and in August 2002 he sadly passed away. The authorities would not even let Baolian see my father one last time.

Baolian is one of the many thousands of unlawfully detained Falun Gong practitioners in China. The persecution in China is still going on. As far as we know, thousands of practitioners have been incarcerated in mental hospitals and abused. Many hundreds have been sentenced to up to eighteen years imprisonment. More than 600 Falun Gong practitioners have died whilst in police custody. Many of them were badly tortured.

I am calling for help from people of goodwill to rescue my sister and all Falun Gong practitioners who have been persecuted like her.

I would heartily welcome your support in the fight to restore basic human rights for all the Chinese people.
