Students and Teachers from Jiaotong University in Shanghai Persecuted for Their Belief in Falun Dafa

Several Falun Gong practitioners from the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at Shanghai's Jiaotong University were recently sentenced and persecuted. Among those detained were teacher Mr. Guo Xiaojun, mechanical engineering student Mr. Mei Jianqi, who started cultivating in 1996, and Department of Energy student Mr. Ju Yanlai, who started in 1999. They were all sentenced to five years in prison. Also, Mr. Wang Xudong, a Master's degree student from the School of Chemical Engineering, was sentenced to four and a half years in prison. They were all detained in Tilanqiao Prison in Shanghai at one time or another. Mr. Ju Yanlai held hunger strikes to protest the persecution for four years and was once near death.

Those sent to labour camps included Mr. Yang Yining, Mr. Bai Jianjun, Mr. Xiang Donghui, and Mr. Wu Yuxin, all PhD. students from the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. Ms. Zhuang Wei, a Master's degree student from the Department of Computer Science, and Mr. Li Tao, a Master's degree student from the School of Mechanical Engineering, were both sent to forced labour camps. Mr. Li Jianbin, who graduated in 1999 from the Department of Computer Science, died as a result of the persecution.

Li Xinkun, male, 67 years old, was the person primarily responsible for the persecution at Jiaotong University. He was the former director of the Security Section. Li was directly in charge of implementing the persecution at the university and participated in all activities involving the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners since July 1999.

After July 20th, 1999, Li Xinkun took an entire floor in a school dormitory and converted it into a private and detention centre. He had iron bars put on all the windows, doors, and exits. He had people attempt to brainwash the detained teachers and students there, and he also determined when those detained could be released.

Li Xinkun conspired with the Wenbao Police Sub-bureau to imprison practitioners who refused to give up their belief in "Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance," and who appealed for justice for Falun Gong. Among them, Mr. Guo Xiaojun, a teacher from the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, and Mr. Mei Jianqi, a fourth year student from the School of Mechanical Engineering, were both sentenced to five years in prison. Several PhD students were sent to labour camps, including Mr. Yang Yining, Mr. Bai Jianjun, Mr. Xiang Donghui, and Mr. Wu Yuxin. Master's degree students Mr. Li Tao and Ms. Zhuang Wei were also sentenced to forced labour.

Li Xinkun was also responsible for the persecution of other practitioners who did the exercises, including a retired teacher named Cheng Jinmeng, a teacher named Wang Wenhuan, and students Sun Jin, Wu Xiaotian, Wu Xiaomei, and Yan Yan.

Li Xinkun also participated in the persecution of practitioners who had graduated from the university--university alumni.
