Police from the Qingyuan County Police Department in Liaoning Province arrested Mr. Sun Hongchang on March 28th, 2006 because he practised Falun Gong. He was detained at the Tianqiao Police Station. Police officer Guan Yong of the Qingyuan County National Security Brigade and police officers from the Fushun City Police Station National Security Division brutally beat Mr. Sun. Guan Yong shocked Mr. Sun's lower body with an electric baton. Guan held down one of Mr. Sun's legs and raised the other over his head. Sun fainted many times from the pain. After this brutal torture, Sun Hongchang's left leg was paralysed and the skin turned purple.

On March 31st, 2006, Mr. Sun Hongchang was taken to the Qingyuan Detention Centre. Because his illness worsened, staff from the detention centre took him to Fushun City Hospital on May 25th, 2006. An electromyogram showed zero muscle strength in his left leg, and he was diagnosed with "left common peroneal nerve and tibial nerve damage." Mr. Sun's pain worsened, and he was taken to the Shenyang Medical School First Hospital, where he was diagnosed with "left sciatic nerve damage" on June 12th, 2006. Mr. Sun's left leg has become shorter than his right leg, and continues to get worse.

On September 18th, a judge from the Qingyuan County Court sentenced Mr. Sun Hongchang to a 5-year prison term. Staff from the Qingyuan Detention Centre took Mr. Sun to the prison on October 16th. Because of his health condition, the prison staff refused to accept him. Currently, Mr. Sun Hongchang is still being detained at Qingyuan Detention Centre.

Mr. Sun Hongchang's left leg is disabled. He cannot walk or take care of himself.

Earlier, police from the Fushun Police Station's National Security Division had beaten Mr. Sun Hongchang's wife to death for practising Falun Gong.
