Mr. Chen Jia'an is a 69-year-old farmer from Weiyuan Village in Daji Town, Zezhou County, Shanxi Province. On August 4th, 2008, Liu Sitong, a Chinese Communist Party Secretary in Yetou Village in Daji Town, reported him to the police for explaining the facts about Falun Gong to people.

Shortly after, National Security Division Head Ma Xianlin and Director Sun Zhonglin of the Daji Police Station took more than a dozen officers to Mr. Chen's home to ransack it and arrest him. The officers confiscated his Falun Gong books, informational materials, and other personal items. He was later detained at the Zezhou County Detention Centre.

In November 2008, a secret trial was arranged for Mr. Chen by the procurator and the Zezhou County Court. In December 2008, he was sentenced to three years in prison. The family did not know anything about his arrest, trial, or his sentencing until much later.

When Mr. Chen's family went to the detention centre to visit him on March 5th, 2009, no one at the centre would talk to them. Finally they were told that Mr. Chen had been taken to Jinzhong Prison in Shanxi Province on March 2nd, 2009.

When the family asked why no one had notified them before transferring Mr. Chen, the guards would not give them a straight answer. Without his family's assistance, Mr. Chen did not have any money for day-to-day living expenses nor did he have a change of seasonal clothing.
