Practitioner Wang Shumei of Boli County, Heilongjiang Province was arrested by police from the Xinhua Police Station while appealing against the persecution of Falun Gong. Ms. Wang was in the family quarters of the Department of Ranching and Livestock, when she was reported by informers. She was sentenced to a seven year prison term, though the court knew that the sentence was illegal. They allowed only six people to be present in the trial - five from the court itself plus Ms. Wang. They did not inform any family members. Now her family members have hired a lawyer to file an appeal.

Ms. Wang is forty one years old, and lived at the Tongtianyi Forest Field in Boli County as a vegetable farmer. She began to practise Falun Gong in 1997. Before 1997, she suffered from nephritis, kidney stones, ulcers, and rheumatic arthritis; among them the nephritis was especially serious. Not long after she began her cultivation all these illnesses healed, she could perform farm work well, and her family was happy again.

Since Ms. Wang's arrest, all the work on the farm has now fallen on her husband's shoulders and her seventy year old in-laws are depressed all the time.
