Ms. Pan Fen from Jiamusi City recovered from many illnesses after she began practising Falun Gong. After July 1999 she was held and imprisoned for her belief in a detention centre and labour camp. The following is her personal statement:

Getting Rid of Illness after Learning Falun Gong

I began practising Falun Gong in 1996. Prior to that, I had many illnesses: heart disease, choleo-cystitis, back pain, and arthritis, among others. I couldn't touch cold water. Unless my hands were kept warm they would swell and hurt. Suffering from aplastic anaemia, my hematin's lowest level reached 3.6 g. This made me faint frequently. Due to insufficient blood supply to the brain, my hair turned white earlier than it should have. Frequent headaches kept me from a good night's rest and I had to stay in the hospital for an entire year. The doctor eventually told my husband, "Take her home and get her affairs in order." In other words, I was to wait at home for death. Spiritually devastated and suffering from illness, I felt I would rather die than live. I wanted to commit suicide.

In this desperate state of mind a Falun Gong practitioner visited me and told me that Falun Gong could save me. She asked whether I would like to practise Falun Gong. My instinctive desire to live made me say yes at once. She took me to the exercise site by bicycle every day to watch Falun Gong videotape lectures, and she taught me the five exercises. Once I started to practise the exercises, I studied the Falun Gong teachings and disciplined myself according to Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. I searched inside whenever I met any conflicts. Gradually my body was purified. I became better and better, without taking injections or medicine. No words can express my appreciation to Falun Gong.

Seized and Taken to a Police Station

Jiang Zemin's, [former leader of China and instigator of the persecution] regime began to oppress Falun Gong out of envy and resentment in July 1999. Without consideration for practitioners' experiences and feelings, the regime's ringleaders required all their media to blatantly discredit Falun Gong to make people hate Falun Gong. Some people really believed their lies. From the top down, staff from the public security departments, Procuratorates and the courts have taken and are still taking part in the persecution, making ignorant people commit crimes. People from my company and community committee kept harassing me, while the local police kept a tight watch on me.

In 2002, agent Sui Zhimin from Dongfeng Police Department broke into my home and took away my collection of Falun Gong writings. A police officer stopped me in the summer of 2003 when I went downstairs. He ordered me to follow him to the Changsheng Police Station, but I didn't co-operate. I shouted loudly, "Falun Gong is good! Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is good!" He called for reinforcements, and three others showed up. They seized me and took me to the police station.

In the police station I told them, "We are a group of good people; you shouldn't believe in lies to persecute Falun Gong." They not only didn't listen to my persuasive comments but confined me in a metal cage. They took away my house key and attempted to find Falun Gong materials. They didn't find anything and had to release me.

Suffering at Detention Centre and at a Forced Labour Camp

Six officers from the Changsheng Police Station, Lu Yue, Chong Wensheng, Hu Jun, and others broke into my home at about 7:00 p.m. on September 29th, 2006, and ransacked it, making everything a mess. They took away my personal belongings, such as Falun Gong books, a computer and a printer, and confiscated three thousand yuan1. They took my non-practitioner husband and me to the Changsheng Police Station. (My observant son escaped and was not caught). My husband had a heart attack from fright. But they still sent me to a detention centre overnight. When they took my blood pressure and it was very high, and the officials there refused to accept me. But the local police forced them to sign a document and sent me to a women's ward. I was persecuted there for more than 40 days and then sent to a forced labour camp.

I couldn't study the Falun Gong teachings and practise Falun Gong exercises while in detention. My former illnesses returned. As I went to the toilet one morning I fainted and fell down. The police doctor there had no pity on me and kicked me with full strength, saying I was pretending to be ill.

Since the police had confiscated all the money we had, my husband had no money to see a doctor for his heart condition. He lay in bed for three days with nothing to eat and drink, until one of my kind neighbours went to our home and found him. They took him to a hospital and saved his life.

During my labour camp imprisonment, my nephew's wife, Zhao Yangyang, who was blinded by greed, collaborated with Li Xuena and Li Xinbo from the labour camp and Chen Wanyou from the police station and bled my family for 20 thousand yuan (my family had to borrow from neighbours). This made my family poorer.

Pressured by illnesses and persecution, my health went from bad to worse. I became extremely weak, but the guards still forced me to do heavy physical labour. One day a guard ordered me to remove snow, but I was too weak to do it. I had a heart attack, lost consciousness, and fell down, twitching with pain and foaming at the mouth. They were afraid I would die in the labour camp and had to release me for treatment on December 30th, 2006. I was eventually released.

Zhao Yangyang came to me when I had been home for just two days and claimed she had spent money to get me released. She forced me to pay her. My family was in deep debt already, so I had no money to give to her. Then she started to smash a TV and other valuables. In a short time my home was smashed up, too miserable to look at. I could barely deal with all that and had to leave home for one week to borrow money. In the end I made great efforts to borrow 4,700 yuan and gave her the money.

Due to the extortion and harassment, our family still has a very heavy debt to pay back, and we live in terribly poor circumstances.

Police should punish evildoers, praise those who do good, and guarantee citizens' safety. But deceived and lured by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), they abuse their constitutional rights and, without restraint, freely arrest practitioners. They break the laws by ransacking practitioners' homes like bandits, breaking up practitioners' families and compelling them to leave home.
