DEMONSTRATORS are planning to protest outside the Chinese consulate in Edinburgh today.

The protest, in support of Chinese performers who appeared in the capital last year, will take place between 10am and noon.

Six key production staff of Shen Yun Performing Arts were denied entry visas into Hong Kong six days before their show is scheduled to debut in the Chinese autonomous region on 27 January.

Organisers of the performance are demanding the visa refusals should be reconsidered by the immigration department of the government of Hong Kong special administrative region.

Shen Yun, a New York-based performing arts group, was invited by the Hong Kong Falun Dafa Association to give seven performances from 27 January to 31 January, which were sold out within a week.

Shen Yun is known for depicting the traditional Chinese culture that was suppressed during the Cultural Revolution.

Albert Ho Chun-yan, a lawyer representing the performers, said: "These production staff have accompanied the performing group to various countries for performances. They are an indispensable part of the performing group."
