Eyewitness Account of Abuse and Mistreatment of Professor Zhang Fengqian at a Brainwashing Facility

Professor Zhang Fengqian from the Department of Philosophy at Sun Yat-Sen (Zhongshan) University in Guangzhou City lost his ability to think coherently as a result of physical abuse and brainwashing at the Sanshui Brainwashing Centre.

A practitioner who was incarcerated at the same facility between May and August 2010, witnessed how Professor Zhang was persecuted, including more than twenty people taking turns monitoring him, tying his limbs to the four corner of a bed for the entire night, and placing him under intensified brainwashing all day long.

The following is the account from that practitioner:

I'm a practitioner from Guangdong Province. I was arrested and taken to the Sanshui Brainwashing Centre on April 23rd, 2010. Mr. Zhang Fengqian was taken to the brainwashing centre at around 6:00 p.m. on May 23rd, 2010.

I heard that he was held in a detention centre for a month following his arrest, during which time he was beaten. When he first arrived at the Sanshui Brainwashing Centre, I could see wounds on his body, his swollen feet, and that his mind was a bit unclear. In the first month, more than twenty people took turns monitoring him every day, and during the night they tied his arms and feet to the four corners of a bed. I often saw those “helpers” shove him. He wasn't allowed to leave his room. My room faced his, so I could clearly see what happened inside his room.

Mr. Zhang was held in Division No. 2. All guards, helpers, and heads of the brainwashing centre took turns brainwashing him. From morning to evening, they made him watch a large number of DVDs and read books that slandered Falun Gong, in attempts to destroy his will.

Mr. Zhang kept trying to inform the guards about the true nature of Falun Gong prior to my release from the centre on August 27th, 2010.

During two months time, I met him when I fetched meals. Sometimes we could talk for a while. I remember he told me that he was determined not to write the so-called “five statements,” to renounce practising Falun Gong. He said he had just learned Falun Gong for several months and still didn't know how to do the exercises. He was arrested at a hotel as he was speaking with people about Falun Gong. I was really impressed, and hoped that he could remain strong-hearted.
