Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Huang Yanlin from Heilongjiang Province has been persecuted by the communist regime since July 20th, 1999. For nine years, from 2002 to October 26th, 2011, he was imprisoned and tortured.

Arrested by Mudanjiang City Domestic Security Division and Sentenced to Nine Years in Prison
In mid July 2002, Mr. Huang and another practitioner rented a place in the Dongan District in Mudanjiang City and started an informational material production site. On October 9th, they hung large banners with the words “Celebrate Falun Dafa Day” in the Cultural Palace and other public places. The city Domestic Security Division, 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong), and other departments jointly investigated. They found a similar, smaller banner with the words “Falun Dafa Day” in a practitioner's home. They tortured the practitioner to obtain the address of the information site and then began to monitor the place. On October 25th at around 5 p.m. Mr. Huang was seized when he went to pick up brochures from the site. He was detained in the branch office of Mudanjiang City Domestic Security Division where he was tortured and interrogated.

He was subjected to the following torture methods:

Wearing a “space helmet:” First a single, then a double layer of plastic bags were put over his head and fastened tightly around his neck. He was deprived of air for 45 seconds until he struggled to breathe. Each form of torture was repeated twice.

Force-fed with mustard seed oil: Mustard seed oil was poured into his stomach through his nostrils. The first time, half a bottle was poured in. Several minutes later, the second half was poured into his nostrils. It was as if all his internal organs had exploded. Mucus and tears ran out of his nose and eyes non stop. (Both forms of torture described here were carried out while he was handcuffed and bound to a tiger bench1.)

Immediately afterward, Mr. Huang was tortured by being “tied up with cords.” First, the centre section of the cord was placed on the back of his neck. Then, two officers, each holding one half of the cord, brought the cord along his shoulder to his arms and around his wrists and tied his hands behind his back. The ends of the cord were tied together tightly. They then pushed his face against the ground, stepped on him, and yanked up the cord tied to his arms.

They lifted his arms lifted several times, but when they saw that this was not painful enough, they tied his arms with two pieces of cord. The cord was loosened and retied, using more force to tie his hands tightly behind his back using two cords. This was followed by brutally hitting the joint areas between his back and arms with a beer bottle.

They also used the soles of their shoes to slap him in the face. Mr. Huang's four front teeth were knocked loose. Around 2 a.m., they took him to another room and handcuffed him to a tiger bench. Standing at either end of the bench, each holding a beer bottle, the two officers mercilessly bashed his knee caps, lower legs, and calves.

Mr. Huang was tortured for 12 days before he was transferred to Mudanjiang City Detention Centre.

On May 6th, 2003, he was sentenced to nine years in jail by the Dongan District Court in Mudanjiang. He was subsequently sent to Mudanjiang Prison.

Persecuted in Prison

Besides forcing him to do slave labour in prison everyday, the guards often summoned Mr. Huang for “talks” to try to make him to give up his belief. July 2009 was a sensitive period for the communist regime as it was the 10th anniversary of the beginning of the suppression of Falun Gong. In early July, the prison issued a document stating that any means could be used to “transform” [forcibly renounce Falun Gong] practitioners.

Around 9 a.m. on July 8th, police officer Wang Enzhe enlisted five convicts, including Yang Jinguo and Zhang Qingpo, to take Mr. Huang to the disciplinary room. Wang ordered them to handcuff his hands behind his back and tightly bind his legs with ropes. Then they poured two basins of cold water over him. The police shocked his entire body with an electric baton while the convicts held his head, arms, and legs. Huge blisters quickly formed on Mr. Huang's neck and stomach from the electric shocks. Immediately afterwards, the guards ordered the convicts to shove him to the ground and restrain him while they brutally bashed him with their batons from the back of his neck to the end of his spine.

After they had beaten him for a long time, the officer slapped him in the face. Mr. Huang kept shouting, “Falun Gong is good!” The guards instructed convicts to find a towel and stuff it into his mouth; then they continued to beat him. When the convicts got tired, they were told to take him back to his cell. Both of his hands were handcuffed, one to each end of a metal bed, and the guards proceeded to slap him. When the guard was exhausted, he told the convicts, “Don't let him sleep until he signs a statement promising to give up the practice.”

On October 26th, 2011, after being persecuted in prison for nine years, Mr. Huang was released and allowed to return home.

Previously Arrested, Escaped, and Became Homeless

On the night of January 22nd, 2002, police seized 11 practitioners at the same time and Mr. Huang was one of them. That day, late at night, while three guards on duty were asleep, Mr. Huang opened his handcuffs and escaped. After that, he moved away and was homeless to avoid persecution.

Previously Placed Under House Arrest for Making Appeals in Beijing, Sent Back to His Hometown, Detained, and Blackmailed

On October 21st, 2000, Mr. Huang and six other practitioners took the train to Beijing to appeal. At the entrance to the appeals office, they were taken in a car to the Dongjingcheng Forestry Bureau liaison office in Beijing. The next day, the forestry police department sent seven officers to Beijing by plane to escort the seven practitioners back to Dongjingcheng Town. They were then sent to the Forestry Detention Centre on October 27th and initially ordered to be detained for a month.

They were ordered to do slave labour. Mr. Huang refused to comply and was taken to the disciplinary office by a guard named Meng. Eight guards beat him up using their fists and legs. Guard Zhao Peng repeatedly slapped him in the face over 30 times. Finally, he was taken back and forced to work till 4 a.m. before he was allowed to sleep.

After one month's detention, one by one, six of the practitioners were released after their family members paid a bribe. Mr. Huang's mother, Teng Yuqin, finally managed to borrow the money and 44 days later, she brought her son home after paying 15,000 yuan2 in extortion.

Note

1. "Tiger Bench": Prisoners are forced to sit on a small iron bench that is approximately 20 cm (6 inches) tall with their knees tied together. With their hands tied behind their backs or sometimes placed on their knees, they are forced to sit straight up and look straight ahead without movement for long periods of time.

2. "Yuan" is the Chinese currency; 500 yuan is equal to the average monthly income of an urban worker in China.
