Following the lead of the Vice Director Diankun Chen, Zhangshi Reform School officials forced more than 1000 Falun Dafa practitioners to suffer three years of brainwashing and brutal torture, using any vile means of deception and persecution that they could think of. After they realised that they could not sway determined Dafa practitioners, they resorted to using individuals who had been forced to give up practising Dafa, and who now assist in the persecution, as tools to deceive practitioners into giving up their belief.
The police severely tortured Dafa practitioners who firmly believed in Truth-Compassion-Tolerance. In the beginning, practitioners were only given a corn bun and some small pickles for each meal. A gang of at least ten criminals surrounded and persecuted each practitioner daily. One practitioner named Jiang Du, who had graduated from a university with a major in Electronics, was tortured until both his feet were severely swollen. He could not wear his shoes and had to be helped up to the toilet. He and Jinmin Wang refused to read any materials that defamed Dafa and as a result they were threatened and beaten by the police and instructors.
Instructor Yi Zhang and Brigade Head Baishun Song often deprived Falun Dafa practitioners of sleep by taking turns to conduct one-on-one interrogations with practitioners every two hours throughout the night. As soon as the practitioners resisted the interrogations causing them to become useless, the officials forced the practitioners to lean with their body bent at a 90-degree angle and their foreheads touching a wall. One practitioner was forced to stand like this with both arms spread out like the wings of a plane. Another was denied sleep for four days and nights. After he was forced to stand against a wall with his forehead touching it and bearing all his weight, he passed out on the floor. Practitioner Mingjun Zhao was beaten with an electric baton by a room full of police officers. Brigade Head Baishun Song cruelly tortured one practitioner by shocking his mouth with an electric baton. Practitioner Hongcai Luo from the North-eastern University was forcefully held on the ground by the collaborators and beaten [collaborators are former Falun Gong practitioners who have stop practising due to brainwashing and torture and are now assisting in the persecution and brainwashing]. Hongcai screamed due to the pain of the torture. His face was swollen beyond recognition. Evil police chief Diankun Cheng sent all Dafa practitioners to other "Education Brigades" for strict monitoring. The sole purpose was to ensure that the practitioners would be even more cruelly and inhumanly tortured. Inmates, who were scheming with the police, overwhelmed practitioner Feizhou Wang from Liaoning University during his strict monitoring. The instructors were promised reduced sentences if they persecuted Falun Gong practitioners. The police from this reform school kept Teacher Li's [founder of Falun Dafa] photo on the floor during the 4 days reserved for visits from relatives each month in 2001. All relatives who refused to stomp on this picture, insult Falun Dafa and Teacher Li Hongzhi, were refused their rights to visit their imprisoned family members. This was then copied and repeated by other forced labour camps such as such as Masanjia and Longshan.
The hotel of the reform school became a headquarters for persecuting Falun Dafa practitioners in 2001. Led by the Brigade Head, Shi, they used "collaborators" to attempt to brainwash Dafa practitioners and force them to renounce their belief by forming a so-called "assistance and instruction group". They tried to brainwash more than 100 Falun Dafa practitioners, especially Xiu Chen, a computer engineer at the Shenyang Agriculture Bank. Xiu Chen went to appeal in Beijing and did not give up his practice when he was sent to a labour camp in 1999. Afterwards his wife divorced him and he was dismissed from his work place. After he gave up his practice against his will, the Shenyang Judicatory and Zhangshi Reform School attempted to gain some credit and used him as a model. At the ceremony where he and his wife remarried, where there were a lot of company leaders in attendance at the City Hall, the reform school supervisor covered the fees. CCTV [Jiang's official mouthpiece] was also invited, and this occasion was used as propaganda and was broadcast many times on that television channel. After he returned home, Xiu Chen had deep regrets for giving up his beliefs under duress. He declared on a Falun Dafa website that all he had written whilst under persecution was null and void. He continued to tell people the truth about the persecution and was arrested while making truth-clarification materials and persecuted by the authorities. It was said that he was given a prison sentence.
Based on what many who know the truth have said, the vast sums of public funds that Jiang's criminal regime has spent on the persecution of Falun Dafa resemble what any other country would spend in times of war. However, the reality is that their goal of completely eradicating Falun Dafa and the principles of Truth, Compassion, Forbearance from the hearts of the people have all been in vain.
