Zhai Yanlai

Zhai Yanlai is an alumnus of Shanghai Jiaotong University, Department of Energy Engineering. The university enrolled Zhai in 1995. He began practising Falun Gong in April 2001. He was illegally detained in the summer of 2001 and was outrageously extorted out of more than 7,000 Yuan [500 Yuan is the average monthly income for an urban worker in China.]. In the end of October 2001, he appealed for Falun Gong in Tiananmen Square. Upon appealing, the police brutally beat him up and detained him in a detention centre in a Beijing suburb. Later, he was transferred to the "Beijing Seventh Section" [This place handles big and important cases in the nation.] where the police tortured him and even broke one of his legs. Because of his deteriorating health, he was unconditionally released after more than thirty days of detention. In early August, he got a job in Shanghai, and around 11pm on September 30, 2002, the police broke into his apartment and took him away. He went on a hunger strike to protest the illegal abduction and the police tightly blocked all message channels and refused to let anyone visit him. While under the eye of the police, he was handcuffed, shackled and deprived of sleep. Under these conditions, he was tortured to the point where he lost his ability to walk and became extremely weak. His case was treated as the biggest case since July 20 in Shanghai and was reported to the National Public Security Bureau. Currently, the police are trying to illegally sentence him.

Li Jianbing

Li Jianbing, alumnus of Shanghai Jiaotong University, Computer Department. Li was enrolled in the university in 1995. He started to practise Falun Gong in 1996. When the nationwide persecution of Falun Gong started, he went to appeal for Falun Gong. He was arrested for it, later released, but only under police surveillance. On May 13, 2000, Li Jiangbing tragically fell out of a window and died on the spot as he tried to evade the police monitoring him near his home. The Public Security Bureau blocked the news of his death and threatened his family to keep quiet and not to appeal. It was only until two months later that other practitioners learned of his death.

Jiang Xinxia

Ms Jiang Xinxia enrolled in the Department of Industry Design of Shanghai Jiaotong University in 1994. She was a volunteer assistant for a Falun Gong exercise site. In July 1999, she went to appeal in Beijing for Falun Gong. She was arrested and subjected to brutal persecution because the authorities took her as an organiser of Falun Gong activities. She was under the police's close surveillance. In late 2002, the police arrested her, accusing her of distributing Falun Gong literature. Jiang Xinxia was sentenced to "re-education" through hard labour in Qingpu Women's Forced Labour Camp in Shanghai.

Yang Yining

Yang Yining is a graduate student pursuing a Doctorate degree in the Computer Department of Shanghai Jiaotong University. At the beginning of the persecution, Yang Yining went to appeal for Falun Gong in Beijing and the police accused him of being "stubborn." In October during the opening of the People's Congress, Yang Yining went to appeal in Beijing again and was brought back with both hands cuffed. The police from the security department of the university illegally detained him for several months. The police also worked with the police in Anhui Province to finally send Yang Yining to the Hefei Mental Hospital. They also spread rumours that Yang Yining had become insane after practising Falun Gong, which could not be further from the truth. After three months of forceful treatment and torture from neurological drugs, Yang Yining was under house arrest in his home in Anhui Province. His girlfriend Zhao Lijun went to Tiananmen Square to appeal for Falun Gong during the Chinese New Year of 2000. She was arrested and detained in Wuhan City. In the Chinese New Year's eve of 2001, police kidnapped Zhao Lijun on her way to work and sent her to a brainwashing centre. After being released, she was once again kidnapped to Qingpu Brainwashing Centre and was subjected to torture for several months.

In September 2001, Yang Yining was detained in Songjiang Detention Centre. In late November, he was sentenced to two and a half years in Dafeng Forced Labour Camp in Jiangsu Province. Zhao Lijun was sentenced to two years in Qingpu Women's Forced Labour Camp.

In April 2001, Zhuang Wei was arrested for distributing truth-clarifying materials of Falun Gong and was imprisoned in a forced labour camp.
