Persecution Stories: My family [Part 1] by a Practitioner in Ireland

My mother (GAO Jinyu) recently passed away on Monday, 15 October 2001. As I live in Ireland, I called the Chinese embassy to see if I could go home, but again they said no. Two sisters of mine weren’t allowed to see my sister- in- law when she went to the labour camp to inform them of my mother’s death. The head guard refused her request; obviously my sisters couldn’t go home for the funeral.

My mother died in Dong Tonghua city, Jilin Province, a north-east region, where my eldest sister lives. My mother had been living with this sister for the last 3 years. My eldest sister, my younger sister and my brother were with my mother before she died. The two sisters and my brother brought my mother’s ashes back to my hometown of Gaomi city, Shandong Province, an eastern coastal province. My other two sisters are held in Jinan Laojiao Suo (Jinan Labour Camp). Jinan is the capital city of Shandong Province.

There are 6 children in my family, 3 older sisters (DAI Chunyan, DAI Xialing and DAI Qiuxia), myself, my younger brother (DAI Xuejun) and my younger sister (DAI Xuemin). Among the 6 of us, two older sisters, my brother and I practise Falun Gong. The two sisters held in the labour camp are DAI Qiuxia (38) and DAI Xialing (40). Both sisters lost their jobs soon after the persecution started in July 1999. And both of them have been detained many times because of their persistence in practising Falun Gong. Qiuxia has been held since December 2000 for a 3-year sentence in Jinan Labour Camp. Prior to that, she was expelled from her company. Her husband divorced her due to huge pressure from the government and police, as well as from the neighbourhood, his relatives, friends and colleagues. The massive propaganda of the Chinese authorities has made ordinary Chinese people believe that Falun Gong is evil, bad and harmful. People who practise Falun Gong are not only suppressed by the government, but also pressurised by families, relatives, neighbours, colleagues and even strangers. My sister Qiuxia was living without a job, income and social welfare with her 8-year-old daughter for nearly half a year before she was sent to the Jinan Labour Camp.

Xialing has been detained about 8 or 9 times during the last over two years. She was also expelled from her company. She was brutally force- fed when she was detained before the Chinese New Year 2000 while she was on hunger strike to protest against the illegal detention. She escaped by jumping out from a 3rd floor building when the police attempted to arrest her and send her to a labour camp in December 2000. She was wandering around for about 8 months with no money, no home, and no contacts with family and friends before she was arrested again and later sent to a labour camp in August. She has a 13-year old daughter who is attending school.

In the labour camp, the guards still forced them to denounce Falun Gong. The guards brainwashed my two sisters, and made my sisters think that Falun Gong and Mr Li Hongzhi deceived them despite the fact that both of the sisters had gained great benefits from practising Falun Gong. They were both cured from severe diseases and achieved so much better health, and their moral values also improved tremendously. For instance, my sister Qiuxia had very bad stomach illness for more than 30 years since she was a young child. This illness disappeared soon after she began to practise Falun Gong. Her short temper also changed and she was more relaxed and more peaceful because of the practice of Truthfulness Compassion Tolerance. My sister Xialing had terrible health and she looked yellow and pale all the time before she started the practice. But her face became rosy and shining just about two weeks after she began the practice, and she also became much happier than before. She also quit smoking, drinking, and frequent social activities (which made her husband and daughter unhappy); instead, she spent more time with her daughter and husband, and became a better person.

The labour camp still holds my sisters although they both denounced Falun Gong after long hours of daily brainwashing. What is the outcome of this denouncement? My sister in law told me that after she and my brother visited them in August, the two sisters are now full of resentment and bitterness. They blamed Mr Li Hongzhi, Falun Gong, my brother (he used to pass them some articles from the Internet) and even me (because I introduced Falun Gong to them). They now believe that the Chinese Communist Party is the most caring ‘person’ which saved them from being harmed by superstitions and someone who has evil intentions. This campaign against Falun Gong practitioners in China is very much like the Great Culture Revolution, or even worse. The Chinese Communist Party is good at using the media propaganda, and the power of the masses. People are made to believe that those are ‘harmful’ to the county and the party are enemies yet are minorities. Every one of the revolutionary masses should step up and criticise those enemies, otherwise, you will be considered and treated the same as those minority enemies.
