Dear.......,

Thank you for your letter of the 21st November relating to Human Rights Day.

I very much share your concern at the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China and agree that more action should be taken by the UN and its leading members and highlight this and bring the pressure on the Chinese authorities to cease their disgraceful activities.

I believe that the decision to award 2008 Olympic Games to Beijing should be also be used as a lever, as it may well be deemed by the Chinese that this was somehow an endorsement of the policies pursued by the Government in relation to human rights or indeed in other areas. I believe it should be made clear that it is not a case and that the awarding of the Games and their smooth operation – and indeed full participation by other countries –remains dependent on China's human rights records showing a marked improvement.

I would be happy for the letter to be used in any activity which you are undertaking in relation to International Human Rights Day on December 10th.

With my best wishes.

Yours sincerely
