On December 30th 2003, Irish Falun Gong practitioners held a press conference in front of the Chinese Embassy in Dublin to commemorate the death of a Falun Gong practitioner from Changchun city in China. Liu Chengjun was recently tortured to death after being arrested and imprisoned because he interrupted a cable TV broadcast to play a video exposing the truth about the persecution of Falun Gong. The Irish practitioners called for severe punishment of the wicked policemen, the murderers and the primary instigator of the persecution, Jiang Zemin.
Two major Irish newspapers sent reporters to cover this important event. Local practitioner Zhao Ming from Trinity College Dublin, who was imprisoned and repeatedly tortured in Beijing Tuanhe Labour Camp for 22 months, commented, “In all the previous persecutions of China’s history, for example the Cultural Revolution, people never voiced their objection or stood up to expose the kind of vicious propaganda that provoked hatred, fighting and killing across the country even though people were persecuted to death. Nowadays, however, some Falun Gong practitioners, represented by Liu Chengjun, chose to tap into the cable TV to disclose the ongoing, large-scale persecution against Falun Gong. Their heroic action upholds the rights endowed by the Chinese Constitution. What they did will be recorded in history because this has never happened in the previous persecutions in China. Based on peacefulness, rationality and perseverance, Falun Gong practitioners resorted to non-violent approaches to resist and expose the persecution. Therefore, I feel it has very important significance for us to commemorate the death of Liu Chengjun. This event will surely be recorded in history.”
