An Anti-Torture Exhibition was held in Oxford city centre on September the 4th 2004, to expose some of the methods used in Chinese labour camps and prisons to force Falun Gong practitioners to renounce their belief in Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance. While some practitioners practised the exercises together and as several practitioners in realistic make-up demonstrated torture methods, which included 'handcuffing' and 'confinement in a small cage', other practitioners collected signatures and discussed the exhibition with passers-by.
As the day wore on and the weather brightened and the atmosphere became increasingly harmonious. Many shoppers and other passersby stopped for some time to take a look at the exhibits and read the information boards. Practitioners distributed leaflets, at times talking in depth about the persecution and Falun Gong, and gathering signatures for a petition to prosecute Jiang Zemin, the instigator of the persecution against Falun Gong. Many onlookers gasped with horror when they learned how brutaly practitioners are treated in China and expressed their sincere support. Two young girls, after signing the petition, took extra forms for their family and friends to sign as well.
Several new practitioners took part in the activity. A young man from London, who had only began to practise the exercises a few days before, travelled to Oxford on his own initiative to help hand out leaflets and gather signatures. About 1500 signatures were collected during the day and several thousand English leaflets were distributed in no time.
