Duan Qiuzhe was an excellent Ph.D. student, both academically and morally, from the Southwest Petroleum College. After July 20, 1999, because she appealed for Falun Gong, she was dismissed from her studies and stripped of her Communist party membership. She was then sent back to her hometown village. Afterwards, the authorities conspired to "brainwash" her using threats. In the end, Duan Qiuzhe gave up her belief in "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance." She turned against Dafa and harmed practitioners in exchange for being permitted to continue to study in college.

Shortly after returning to college, she contracted liver disease. Even when she had done so much harm, the practitioners at her college tried very hard to help her return to cultivation and atone for her mistakes. Duan Qiuzhe wanted to return to practising Falun Gong, but she could not resist the temptation of personal gain. She only practised Falun Gong secretly at home. She dared not to openly denounce the crimes she committed against Dafa or announce her determination to persist in practising in Dafa. She later passed away due to her deteriorating health.

The death of Duan is tragic. Though she was not beaten to death, she was nonetheless a victim of the vicious persecution that seeks to destroy one's inner being and beliefs.
