Mr Zhang Shouren, 66, used to work at a heavy machinery and equipment plant in Taiyuan City. He had been free of illness since he started practising Falun Gong in 1997. On October 17, 2000, police officers arrested him when he went to Beijing to appeal against the persecution of Falun Gong. On October 21, he was sent to the detention centre in Taiyuan City, where police officers and inmates beat him. He was forced to sit on an ice-cold cement floor day in and day out. He suffered greatly both physically and mentally. He had chest pains and nausea, and he drooled uncontrollably.

His family asked the local police station in Taiyuan City to send him back many times. The police officers extorted 1000 yuan (1) from them in January 2001 and finally released Mr. Zhang. Mr. Zhang was extremely weak. He had no strength in his legs and was nauseous. He coughed up blood and was so thin that he was just skin and bones. The doctor diagnosed him with a "pulmonary abscess." He died on August 24, 2001.

Note:

(1) "Yuan" is the Chinese currency; 500 yuan is equal to the average monthly income of an urban worker in China.
