During Chinese President Hu Jintao’s visit to Spain, the country’s biggest newspaper El Pais published an article entitled Cruel Torture and the Death Penalty to expose the Chinese Communist regime’s human rights abuses. The article pointed out that there are many dark sides of China’s miracles and the fact that both economic openness and political impediment coexist in China.

Human rights

The article revealed that China keeps abusing human rights and meting out capital punishment arbitrarily. Amnesty International also pointed out that in 2004 alone, at least 3,400 people were sentenced to death and executed, and cruel torture is a common approach to the persecution. It is estimated that over 250,000 people have been relentlessly tortured in China’s forced labour camps.

Freedom of speech

The article also indicated that thousands of people have been arrested and put into jail simply because they exerted their rights to freedom of speech and freedom of belief endowed by China’s Constitution. Among others, tens of thousands of Falun Gong practitioners have been illegally apprehended, put into jail or sent to forced labour camps after the spiritual movement Falun Gong was outlawed by the Chinese Communist regime in 1999.

This article also revealed in-depth analyses of the fact that after China develops its economy, only a small portion of its population have benefited from its economic growth and that many incidents of violence took place in the wake of the Chinese government’s acquiring private property without just compensation.
