Ms. Li Gaizhen, 60 years old, was a Falun Dafa practitioner from Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province.

Officials from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) have persecuted her many times. Police from the Xinle City Police Station arrested and beat her, stripped her of all her clothes on a cold and snowy day and poured cold water over her. After being sentenced to 3 years in a forced labour camp, where she was brutally tortured, Ms. Li died on April 6th, 2006.

On November 29th, 1999, Ms. Li and her husband, Wang Qinglin, travelled to Beijing to appeal for Dafa. Ms. Li was arrested and taken back and detained at the Shijiazhuang City District Police Station. Staff from the Jianshe Avenue District Police Station extorted 3,200 yuan1 from her family. After 15 days of detention, Ms. Li was transferred to her workplace. Her workplace detained her until December 31st, 1999.

In the afternoon of February 1st, 2000, agents from the Xinle City Police station broke into Li Gaizhen's home and arrested her. Many young and strong police officers beat this almost 60-year-old lady. Then they handcuffed her to a big tree in the backyard of the police station during a cold winter day. They did not take her to the detention centre until late in the night. The next day was even colder. Those officers, wearing heavy and warm coats, tortured her again. They made a high snow pile. Then they forced Ms. Li to take off most of her clothes and made her crawl over the snow pile. Although wearing only underwear and a skirt, they covered her with ice, and then poured cold water over her. After such torture, over ten officers beat Ms. Li cruelly in turn. They humiliated her by yelling at her in filthy language. Ms. Li's face was swollen, her lips injured and a great amount of blood gushed out of her mouth.

After being detained at Xinle Detention Centre for 43 days, Li Gaizhen was transferred to the Fourth Squadron of Shijiazhuang labour camp. There she was unlawfully detained for another 3 years. Her husband, Wang Qinglin, died on April 16th, 2001, because of continuous harassment by the CCP personnel from the local police station, residential committee and his workplace.

After Li Gaizhen was released from the labour camp, staff from the police station monitored and followed her around the clock. Sometimes, they broke into her home to disturb her peace and ransack her home. They continuously persecuted her. Ms. Li was forced to sign a guarantee statement that she would no longer practise Falun Gong. She was severely traumatised mentally and physically. On the first day of the Chinese New Year in 2005, a blood vessel in her brain burst. On April 6th, 2006, Ms. Li Gaizhen passed away due to the torture, harassment and physical abuse she had suffered.
