On March 2nd, 2006, Jilin City Falun Gong practitioners Mr. Wang Jianguo and his wife Ms. Zhao Qiumei were arrested by police officer Tan Xinqiang and others from the Nanjing Police Station. Subsequently, Ms. Zhao was sentenced to one year of forced labour. Mr. Wang was tortured during interrogation at the Nanjing Station and was later sent to the Jilin City Detention Centre. When he protested the unjust detention by means of a hunger strike, the police began force-feeding him. On April 10th Mr. Wang Jianguo died as a result of this persecution. He was 30. On April 13th, the family set up a memorial pavilion to commemorate him.

Dead after only 40 days in detention. His parents attended their son's funeral.

Wang Jianguo lived in Hongyuan Economic Development Area in Jilin City. His father was deputy chairman of the Jilin City Martial Arts Association, as well as head master of the Baji Martial Arts Hall. Mr. Wang Jianguo and his wife ran a small restaurant and had a happy family. Because they practised Falun Gong and followed the principles of "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance," the family was severely persecuted.

On the morning of April 24th, 2006, four people were looking at the bulletins posted outside of Mr. Wang's house. They were spying on Wang Jianguo's family. After family members approached them, these four people left the scene in a black car. According to an eyewitness, these people were agents from the national security police. One of them had previously participated in an illegal house search at the Wang residence. At 6 p.m., Hongyuan Economic Region director Jiang Huiyou and two other persons came to the Wang family house to harass the family members.

At 10:30 a.m. on April 25th Fu Bin and four other police officers from the Hadawan Police Station came to the Wang household. Two wore uniforms and the other three were in plainclothes. They saw a student of Mr. Wang Shusen (Mr. Wang's father) and demanded his home and work address. The student said, "My teacher's family is having to endure such a tragedy, I had to come and see." The police warned him, "You'd better stay away." The police also asked who had visited lately. The student said they were all Wang family members and martial arts students. When the police asked where the students came from, the students said they came from all over the country. Then the police asked about Mr. Wang Jianguo parents' whereabouts and also searched the house.

At 1 p.m., police officer Fu Bin from Hadawan Police Station and a driver came to the house again. Fu Bin asked the family members, "Where are Wang Jianguo's parents? This lawsuit is serious and needs to be settled with Wang's parents face-to-face." He also threatened them not to sue anymore, "It has already been publicised enough; the whole country has heard about it. Now you have built this mourning pavilion. It brings a bad image to our city. About Wang Jianguo's death case, you should try to resolve it quickly. Otherwise, the authorities have the right to cremate his body without your consent." Family members said, "If this issue is not resolved to our satisfaction, we will not stop our lawsuit. We will even bring it all the way to the central government."

At 8 a.m. on April 20th, Mr. Wang's family came to the investigation section at the Chuanying District Police Department to make some requests. Wang Shouyi, the person in charge of Wang Jianguo's case, met with them. Family members said, "Wang Jianguo was killed by your persecution and we want you to release his wife so she can attend her husband's memorial service." Wang Shouyi said that they should talk to the forced labour camp. When the family asked about the cause of Wang Jianguo's death, Wang Shouyi brought out the death report and showed it to the family. Under "cause of death" it stated: " Wang died after all medical treatments failed." The family members said, "He was dead upon arrival. Why would they still perform emergency medical treatment?" When the family asked the police to return Wang Jianguo's body, Wang Shouyi said, "You have the right to ask for the body; let me ask my superior." The family also asked that the family properties and money confiscated be returned to them. Wang Shouyi said, "We won't return any belongings. As for the 3500 yuan1 in cash, we did not receive this money from the Nanjing Police Station, so we have no idea where it is."

On the morning of April 24th, two members of Wang Jianguo's family went to the Heizuizi Forced Labour Camp to see Wang Jianguo's wife, Ms. Zhao Qiumei. They saw her at 11 a.m., but prison guard Xiao Aiqiu was with them the whole time. Family members told Ms. Zhao about some family issues. The guard interrupted, "You should persuade her. Since she has refused to write a document to denounce Falun Gong, her sentence will be extended." That same day, three other family members visited Jilin City Forced Labour Camp, where Mr. Wang was tortured to death. Family members demanded an explanation from guard Cong Maohua on Wang Jianguo's death. Cong said, "All we can do is to pay 3,000 yuan as compensation to the family, including cremation costs. You can keep the ashes. All other damages were Wang Jianguo's personal responsibility; we are not responsible." Cong Maohua also provided an activity list detailing Wang Jianguo's detention.

After Wang Jianguo suffered from brutal torture in Nanjing Police Station, he was transferred to the Jilin City Detention Centre, where he was tortured by force-feeding. He died on April 10th, 2006. On April 13th, Wang's family built a mourning pavilion in the family courtyard. At the entrance they put up some display boards. These boards showed two conflicting death reports. They also posted some questions concerning Wang Jianguo's death. On that day, many family members and relatives gathered. A family member, not a Falun Gong practitioner, wrote an account of the events.

The account said: "Wang Jianguo, 30 years old, and his wife ran a small restaurant on Chaoyang Street. On March 2nd, 2006, the Nanjing Police arrested them and confiscated belongings and cash worth more than 30,000 yuan without giving any receipts. Even after family members requested that the items and cash to be returned, the police refused to answer. Wang Jianguo was sent to Jilin City First Detention Centre. On April 11th Wang Jianguo's family was informed of his death. We write this account in hopes that his soul in heaven feels some comfort." They posted this account at the entrance so that everyone could read it and learn the facts about his death.

Since that day, many of Wang family's friends and neighbours have come to pay tribute to Wang Jianguo. Many people have even burned incense for him. Some migrant workers also came to see the boards. Despite the remote location of Wang's family, many people stopped by and saw these things. Many villagers said with tears in their eyes, "He died so tragically. Why did they kill such a good boy? The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is finished."
