Mr. Sun Yongming from Langzhong City, Sichuan Province

Mr. Sun Yongming, 46, was an Assistant Manager at Yuanmanma Company in Langzhong City, Sichuan Province. After he started practising Falun Gong in April 1999, his health and temperament improved. All of his ailments, including diabetes, disappeared without any trace. Both Mr. and Mrs. Sun practised Falun Gong.

Since Jiang Zemin and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) started to openly persecute Falun Gong on July 20th, 1999, the police often harassed Sun Yongming at his home. Mrs. Sun was arrested three times for speaking to people about the facts of Falun Dafa and sentenced to one year of forced labour. In addition, the police extorted 9,000 yuan1 from them as an illegal fine.

Around 9:30 p.m. on January 21st, 2000, five policemen broke into Mr. Sun's home and tried to take Mrs. Sun to a brainwashing centre. Because Mr. and Mrs. Sun resisted the illegal arrest, the police brought in reinforcements including the chief of the local Public Security Bureau. They carried Mrs. Sun away by force. Mr. Sun was also arrested and imprisoned in the No. 2 Detention Centre after he questioned the police, "Do you even know what the law means?!" The police released Mr. Sun after they extorted 100 yuan from his son. However, Mrs. Sun was imprisoned for four-and-a-half months.

The constant surveillance, harassment and persecution put Sun Yongming under terror and fear for a long time. As a result, his diabetes returned. He died on August 12th, 2006.

Ms. Shang Zhongxian from Shiyan City, Hubei Province

Ms. Shang Zhongxian, 49, was Director of Human Resources at the Dongqinei Accessory Company Branch in Shiyan City, Hubei Province. She started practising Falun Gong in 1994. Ms. Shang was illegally arrested and imprisoned for several months in 2000 for openly calling for justice for Falun Gong in Beijing, but she was released because of her uncompromising righteous thoughts. However, she was fired by her employer for no valid reason. Shang Zongxian also became one of the primary targets of persecution in the area. Before the arrival of each so-called "sensitive date", she would be harassed by the authorities.

In the latter half of January 2005, Shiyan City's 610 Office and a policeman named Zhu Bangyi directed policemen to arrest and send a large number of Falun Gong practitioners in the area to a brainwashing centre. Around 3:00 p.m. on January 22nd, 2005, Pei Zhiyong, Director of the Security Department at Dongyue Branch of the Public Security Bureau, took eight policemen to the home of Falun Gong practitioners Mr. Zhang Hongwei and Ms. Shang Zhongxian. They broke in and ransacked the premise, leaving nothing unturned. They took away the two practitioners, who were only wearing their underwear, by force. The practitioners were taken to a police car and then to a brainwashing centre. Their two-year-old child was left alone unattended at home, crying and screaming, with the front door wide open.

Ms. Shang Zhongxian succumbed to the torture at the forced brainwashing centre and renounced Falun Gong in writing. As a result of the terror and threats, her old illness resurfaced. Although she was released after the Chinese New Year of 2005, her health deteriorated quickly. She passed away on August 5th, 2005.
