According to a report by Deutsche Welle (DW) on March 15th, 2006, German MPs from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the Free Democratic Party (FDP), and the Green’s Party have jointly submitted a resolution to the Federal Parliament condemning the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) system of forced labour education. Based on a report by Florian Toncar, spokesman for the FDP and member of the Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid Committee, stating that all parliamentary parties had reached a unanimous agreement and that in early May the parliament will have voted to pass the severely critical resolution.
The resolution makes a comparison between the CCP’s system of forced labour education and the Soviet Union’s gulags. The resolution states, “The system of forced labour education is the CCP’s ruling tool to impose political re-education and brainwashing on its prisoners. Dissidents are purposefully imprisoned together with usual prisoners so as to exert mental pressure on them. Prisoners are kept in very bad labouring circumstances and very poor sanitary situations. In some prisons, prisoners are even beaten by prison guards or forced to work for extended working hours every day, seven days a week. Prisoners work in extremely poor situations.”
