Ms. Wu Zhengrong and Ms. Jing Shaofang from Mianyang City, Sichuan Province have frequently been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Ms. Wu left her home because of the persecution and her whereabouts are unknown. Ms. Jing has been detained for more than seven years and was tortured during that time. She was once forced to sleep on a "dead man's bed1" for 18 days and afterwards her legs were purple and swollen and she could not stand up.

Ms. Wu Zhengrong, 50, is from Mianyang City, Sichuan Province, used to be a quality control inspector in the 204 Factory. Her physical as well as mental health improved a lot after she started to practise Falun Gong in 1997. After the persecution started in July 1999, Falun Gong was brutally suppressed and Ms. Wu's life was no longer peaceful. She was imprisoned for a long time. After her release, the CCP forced her to report to the authorities every other day and to be interrogated every three days. The police often harassed her by phone or at her home and followed her all the time. Her family was very frightened. In May 2001, Ms. Wu had to leave her home to avoid further persecution and to protect her family. As of today, her family has not heard from her.

Ms. Jing Shaofang, 63, is from Jiaonan District, Mianyang City, Sichuan Province. She had many illnesses before she started to practise, including lower back pain, bone extrusion, skin diseases, and headaches. When she began to practise Falun Gong, she regained her health and became more energetic.

One year after Ms. Jing had practised Falun Gong, the CCP started its suppression. From July 20th, 1999 until end of 2000, she was unlawfully imprisoned three times because she told people the truth about the persecution. The authorities went to her home every couple of days trying to force her to write a guarantee statement renouncing Falun Gong. She never cooperated.

In June 2000, Ms. Jing went to Beijing to appeal for justice for Falun Gong the first time and was sent back to Mianyang City and imprisoned. She refused to renounce Falun Gong. By the end of December 2000, she went to Beijing again to appeal. The authorities arrested her and sentenced her to ten years in prison.

As of the year 2007, Jing Shaofang had suffered seven years of torture in prison, which caused her to be severely underweight. Her teeth fell out, and her hair turned white and fell out as well.

The CCP forced Ms. Jing to sleep on a "dead man's bed", a method used to punish death row prisoners. She had to lie on the bed with her hands and legs cuffed. They kept her on the "dead man's bed" for 18 days. Afterwards, her legs were purple, bruised, and swollen and she could not stand up. She had to sit on the ground and use her hands to move around. She needed help with her daily activities until she recovered two weeks later.

Note

1. "Death Bed" torture: A practitioner is tied to a bed with his hands handcuffed above his head to the bed rails, and his legs tied with thin nylon ropes. The rope is then tightly wrapped around the practitioner's body and the bed, from his legs to his chest. The rope is wrapped so tightly that the practitioner has difficulty breathing and eventually loses consciousness.
