Ms. Chen Qi, 45, a former sales person at the Jiujiang Transportation Bank, has been brainwashed, and sentenced to imprisonment because she is practising Falun Gong.

Ms. Chen Qi started practising Falun Gong in 1997, and her mental and physical health greatly improved. In 2000, while she was on her way to Beijing to appeal for the right to practise Falun Gong, she was arrested by police officers of the Railroad Police Station in Wuchang City. Officers with the Sanli Street Police Station transported her to the Jiujiang City Detention Centre. After she was detained for 13 days, personnel from the Xunyang District Public Security Sub-bureau extorted 16,000 yuan1 from her family and then released her on bail.

On the night of January 13th, 2001, she was deceived by two police officers from the Sanli Street Police Station and detained there overnight. The following day she was transferred to Xunyang Brainwashing Centre located in the Balihu Detention Centre for three months.

At the end of September 2001, Ms. Chen was arrested by Xu Shuiming, the Deputy Director of the Xunyang Public Security Bureau, while she was distributing leaflets exposing the persecution. She was again taken to the Jiujiang Detention Centre and this time held for about 18 months.

In 2002, Chen Qi was sentenced to a prison term of six years. During that time, she was also fired from her job.

At the end of February 2003, Chen Qi was imprisoned in Jiangxi Women's Prison, where she was inhumanely tortured. While she was in prison, her husband, under great pressure, was forced to divorce her, and a once happy family was destroyed.
