Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Zhou Qingyu, 67, was a retired worker from the Dajiang Factory in Banan District, Chongqing City. He was arrested in early 2007 while distributing leaflets exposing the persecution and telling people the facts about Falun Gong and sentenced to 18 months of forced labour. He was detained at the Xishanping Forced Labour Camp in Chongqing City. During the "training session" in July 2007, he was in the First Section of the Seventh Ward. Prisoner Li Liang hit Mr. Zhou in the neck, which caused a painful injury. He had to bow his head all the time, even while labouring and doing military training on the field.

After the "training" session ended, he was locked in the Second Section of the Seventh Ward. He was forced to clean everyday and often teased by prisoners because of his neck injury. Falun Gong practitioners are forced to sleep on the top level of the bunk beds, which was very hard for him, for he was elderly, had high blood pressure, and his neck was injured and not treated.

Mr. Zhou suffered from a stroke on the night of December 29th, 2007. Another practitioner, Mr. Wang Qi, found him with his head deeply lowered and asked him why he would not raise his head. He did not answer and did not react when Mr. Wang touched him. Mr. Wang Qi reported this to the guards, but they refused to rescue him quickly enough. Mr. Zhou Qingyu died that night.

When Mr. Zhou's family came after hearing of his death, the guards locked all the cell gates, and did not allow anyone in the hallway or yard, fearing his family would find out how he died.
