Ms. Tan Lingfang is retired staff member of the Power Supply Bureau of Yunnan Subsidiary Company of Southern Electrical Network Company. On April 22nd, 2005, more than 10 plain-clothes personnel stormed into Ms. Tan Lingfang's home, forcefully handcuffed her, dragged her from fourth floor down to first floor, pushed her into a vehicle that was waiting by the curb, and took her to the Kunming Second Detention Centre. Ms. Tan Lingfang was secretly sentenced to three years of imprisonment and was imprisoned at the Yunnan Second Women's Prison.
That very evening, Ms. Tan Lingfang's home was ransacked. Without displaying any credentials, more than 10 police confiscated her personal belongings and two computers of Ms. Tan Lingfang's younger son, who was suffering from an illness, as well as Ms. Tan Lingfang's belongings. Her home was turned into a mess by the police, but the police did not even give her an informal receipt for the items they took.
During the period Ms. Tan Lingfang was imprisoned at the Yunnan Second Women's Prison, her family suffered greatly, causing her younger son's condition to worsen. Her younger son contracted renal failure uraemia, and almost lost his life. He had to go to hospital for dialysis to survive.
Although Ms. Tan Lingfang has been released, the community and local police station frequently make phone calls, or visit her home to harass her.
Ms. Tan Lingfang started to practise Falun Gong in 1997, and in a short period of several months, her many diseases vanished into thin air. On July 20th, 1999 Jiang Zemin's, [former leader of China and instigator of the persecution] regime started the bloody suppression of Falun Gong. Ms. Tan Lingfang's telephone line was reported to the authorities and monitored, her activities were monitored, and her home was ransacked many times.
Before the Chinese New Year in 2000, she was the coordination person of the local Falun Gong exercise site, and was arrested many times and taken to the Yongchang local police station of Wuhua District in Kunming City for interrogation. Because her husband strongly protested, one police officer actually attempted to beat her husband (her husband does not practise Falun Gong). Because she persisted in her belief, the police threatened to confiscate her retirement pension.
During the several years of persecution, Ms. Tan Lingfang explained the facts about Falun Gong to provincial and municipal governmental agencies, police system, judicial departments, public media, schools and the countryside populace all over the nation by means of writing letters. On July 19th, 2004 at about 11 o'clock, the secretary of State Security Division of Wuhua District, Kunming City, Zheng Hongbing, led a group of police to force their way into her home. They ransacked her home and arrested Ms. Tan Lingfang, taking her to the Luosiwan Local Police Station, where she was interrogated until she was allowed to go home at 7:30 in the evening. The police confiscated her family's property, causing her 65-year-old husband and their sons to fear for their lives. The police also instigated the manager of the Retirement Office of Kunming Municipal Power Supply Bureau, to frequently go to her home to harass and intimidate her.
