Ms. Liu Yanyun, 55, lived in Jiamusi City, Heilongjiang Province. She used to have necrosis of the femoral head, and went to Beijing and Shanghai to find a cure, but her efforts were unsuccessful. After practising Falun Gong in 1995, all of her illnesses disappeared. A few days before the New Year of 2000, Ms. Liu went to Beijing to appeal for justice for Falun Gong but was arrested and detained back in Jiamusi City for more than 100 days. She was released after police extorted a large sum of money from her family.

Ms. Liu Yanyun died on September 13th, 2008

In August 2000, Ms. Liu went to the home of her relatives in Liushu Island, Jiangbei District to inform them about the persecution of Falun Gong and dispel the state propaganda attacking the practice. She was reported and arrested by the police. The police tortured Ms. Liu by various means at the Jiangbei District Police Department, including a torture called"Riding an Airplane"1, being forced to stand for long periods of time, and sleep deprivation. Ms. Liu went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution and was cruelly force-fed.

Soon afterwards she was taken to a forced labour camp, and went through forced brainwashing. She succumbed to the lies from the brainwashing and was released after six months. This period of time caused her unbearable mental anguish.

In 2001, officers from Shunhe Police Station in Qianjin District often harassed Liu Yanyun by coming to her home and threatening her. Once, her family scolded these intruders, but Ms. Liu was tormented to the point where she was almost ready to jump off the building. Finally, the police gave up their efforts to arrest her.

On September 26th, 2002, agents secretly followed her family after work to her home, broke in and arrested Liu Yanyun, and detained her for ten months in the Jiamusi City Detention Centre. During her detention in December 2002, local police used her home phone to call another practitioner, Ms. Zhang Lingde, who used to contact Ms. Liu often. They deceived her into going to Ms. Liu's home and arrested her at her apartment building. Ms. Zhang was sentenced to three years of forced labour (see also http://www.clearwisdom.net/emh/articles/2006/8/14/76822.html).

Ms. Liu was sentenced to two years in prison, and served ten months in the Heilongjiang Province Women's Prison located in Harbin City. At first the Harbin Prison refused to accept her due to her failing the physical exam, but on July 31st, 2003, she was forcibly incarcerated in the Harbin Prison with several other practitioners. Ms. Liu became very thin and weak after this imprisonment. Even after her release, the local police kept harassing her at home, and she never physically recovered.

During the time of the 2008 Olympics, local officers harassed and arrested Falun Gong practitioners on a large scale, along with their families. Under the constant pressure, Ms. Liu's physical condition worsened and she died in the early morning of September 13th, 2008.

Note

1. "Riding an Airplane" -- In this torture, the head is bent down until it cannot go down any further, while the hands are pulled up and held up to the highest point. The hips have to point up. One is forced to keep this position unchanged for a long time. See illustration on http://www.clearwisdom.net/emh/articles/2004/9/29/52921.html.
