Honest Farmer in Shanxi Province Arrested, Sentenced to Forced Labour and Tortured

Shang Yongfa is a farmer in Sangyuan Village, Fengzhou Town, Feng County, Shanxi Province. On January 11th, 2009, his family went to Zaozihe Forced Labour Camp to visit him. They noticed a big swollen bloody lump on the back of his head. There were wounds on his forehead, and the back of his right hand was frostbitten. When a family member asked him what happened, Shang Yongfa merely cried and did not reply.

Mr. Shang Yongfa, 52 years old, is an honest, benevolent, and helpful man. He was arrested for no legitimate reason and his family is worried about his safety.

On February 19th, 2008, officers from Longkou Police Station and the Feng County police department collaborated with the Feng County 610 Office¹. Without showing any identification cards, they barged into Mr. Shang's home. They used the fact that he possessed materials exposing the persecution of Falun Gong in his house as an excuse to arrest him. They took him back to Longkou Police Station to be interrogated. He was persecuted for three months, and the police extorted one thousand yuan² from his family before releasing him.

The police then arrested Shang Yongfa's wife, Liu Guiqin, also a practitioner, on February 21st, 2008. They incarcerated her for seven days in the Feng County hospitality centre and interrogated her continuously. They did not let her sleep. After they persecuted her for 23 days, they released her on bail. She returned home to await sentencing.

At 11.30 p.m. on November 27th, 2008, the 610 Office instigated the police to once again barge into Mr. Shang's home. With the excuse of taking records, they took him away to the police station. Later they took him to Zaozihe Forced Labour Camp.

1. "The 610 office" is an agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong, with absolute power over each level of administration in the Party and all other political and judiciary systems.

2. "Yuan" is the Chinese currency; 500 yuan is equal to the average monthly income of an urban worker in China.
