Falun Gong practitioner Chang Guiyun, aged 59, from Jiaohe City, Jilin Province, is being severely persecuted at the Heizuizi Women's Prison of Changchun City. She has lost all her teeth, lost a lot of weight, her facial features have become deformed and her hair has turned grey. She is unable to speak clearly or perform daily functions well.

Ms. Chang is forcibly brainwashed and constantly watched by inmates who are assigned to monitor and torture practitioners. She is forced to sit on a small plastic stool for 15 hours a day. She is also forced to watch video programmes defaming Falun Gong, and then has to repeatedly write essays renouncing her belief in Falun Gong. She is not allowed to go to bed until she finishes writing the essays. Every day from five in the morning until night, Ms. Chang and other practitioners are brainwashed this way. Under such great pressure, many practitioners have started showing symptoms of mental stress, and some have developed physical problems that they never had before, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, uterine cancer, ossein proliferation. These diseases cause loss of mobility and a decline in their health.

Due to the torture in the prison, Ms. Chang's arm was broken, and her cerebral thrombosis recurred. She has lost a lot of weight, her hair has turned grey, her teeth have all fallen out, she dribbles from the mouth, has difficulty eating, and she is constantly tearful. Upon seeing her condition, her family could not help but cry. During family visits, Ms. Chang just sobs. It is hard to tell the degree to which her physical and mental health has been affected by the persecution.

Ms. Chang was arrested by the police in a computer store on March 21st, 2008. On July 4th, she and four other practitioners Shi Xiuzhen, Zhang Min, Pang Shuwen, and Liu Baochun were sentenced by the Jiaohe Court. Ms. Chang was sentenced to eight years imprisonment. When detained at the Jiaohe Detention Centre, she was tortured with various methods, including Hang Up, Hanging Up in the Air, and Tiger Bench1.

Ms. Chang is a good person who has not committed any crime. She is jailed because of the persecution and the trial. Due to Ms. Chang's poor health condition, her family requested the prison to release her on medical parole, but their request was rejected without any reason given.

Note

1. "Tiger Bench": Prisoners are forced to sit on a small iron bench that is approximately 20 cm (6 inches) tall with their knees tied together. With their hands tied behind their backs or sometimes placed on their knees, they are forced to sit straight up and look straight ahead without movement for long periods of time.
