Maonan Procuratorate and Maonan Court, both in Maoming City, sentenced four Falun Gong practitioners on May 20th, 2010. Ms. Lu Hongfei was sentenced to 15 years, Mr. Li Jian to 12 years, Ms. Cheng Li to 11 years, and Ms. Zhang Weirong to 6 years.

Those involved with sentencing them were Li Zhiqiang, chief judge; Wen Guoyao, judge; Wu Yuemei, deputy judge; and Chen Zetao, court clerk.

The evidence used against them was Falun Gong books and materials found in the rental places where these practitioners lived, and websites related to Falun Gong visited on their computers.

Like other practitioners, the four listed above practised Falun Gong, improved themselves according to the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, and told others the facts about Falun Gong. They were arrested for doing so on September 24th, 2009. Ms. Liang Shaolin was also arrested on the same day, but her whereabouts remain unknown.

Ms. Lu Hongfei, a 48-year-old Maoming City resident, was detained for 15 days in 2000. Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials often went to her home to harass her. To avoid further persecution, she has been forced to stay away from her home for many years.

Mr. Li Jian is a 31-year-old resident of Yangjiaozhen Town in the Maogang District. He went to Beijing to appeal in 2001 and was sent to a labour camp for one year. After returning home in 2002, he was soon picked up and taken to Maoming Brainwashing Centre by the CCP, which used the 16th CCP Congress as justification for detaining him. Later he was sent to Sanshui Forced Labour Camp, but he still did not give in. After the labour camp term expired, officials sent him back to Maoming Brainwashing Centre. He went on a hunger strike for more than 10 days to protest. Fearing he might die, the guards released him. Still the CCP officials continued to harass him, so Mr. Li Jian had no choice but to stay away from his home to avoid further persecution. His parents were often worried about him.

Ms. Zhang Weirong is a 54-year-old resident in Maoming City. Her husband died early, and she took care of her two sons by herself. Because she appealed for the right to practise Falun Gong, she was sent to a labour camp for one year in 2001.

Ms. Chen Li, 43 years old, is a Xinyi City resident.
