Mr. Li Yanwei from Shuangcheng City, Heilongjiang Province, was sentenced to 13 years in prison in 2002. He is currently being tortured in Hulan Prison.
On June 11th, 2010, Mr. Li's family visited him in Hulan Prison. He was brought to them by someone supporting him by his arm. Mr. Li was emaciated and weak. He could not walk steadily and his eyes were dull. His family barely recognised him.
Mr. Li contracted pneumonia due to the inhuman treatment in prison. His family was worried and requested bail so that he could be released for medical treatment. Chen Weiqiang, chief of the prison education reform division, said that Mr. Li was not allowed to see a doctor. When the family asked why Mr. Li's arms were full of needle marks, Chen did not answer. Mr. Li was transferred to the 14th ward prior to his family's visit.
