Arrested Numerous Times for Appealing for the Right to Practise Falun Gong
Ms. Sun Fudi started practising Falun Gong in February 1998. Before that she suffered from numerous illnesses, including pain along her sciatic nerve, low blood pressure, tuberculosis, bronchitis, and stomach problems. She also had a bad temper and often fought with her husband over financial problems. When she started practising Falun Gong and began to follow the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, all her illnesses disappeared and her temperament changed for the better.
On July 20th, 1999, she was arrested when she went to Pulandian to appeal for Falun Gong. On the evening of July 22nd, she was taken to the police station in her hometown and was locked in a small room of about 6 square metres. She was also forced to watch programmes that slandered Falun Gong.
Wang Guojing, the village Chinese Communist Party (CCP) secretary, and Wang Xuanfu, head of Xinglongbao Village, went to Ms. Sun's workplace on April 10th, 2000, and demanded to know if she still practised Falun Gong. Ms. Sun said that she did. They told her that if she said she no longer practised, they would not report her to the police, otherwise they would have to. Ms. Sun firmly told them, “I do practise Falun Gong.”
The next morning the head of the Political and Judiciary Committee and four police officers forcibly removed Ms. Sun from her workplace, and took her to the police station. Head of the police station Liu Wei, head of the political department Chen, and an officer with the surname Zheng took turns trying to force Ms. Sun to give up her belief. Ms. Sun refused. At around 3:00 p.m. the officers took her to the city police department, and later transferred her to the city detention centre, where she was held for 78 days.
Ms. Sun and two other practitioners went to the Lianshan area on May 11th, 2001. Several police officers followed them and tried to take them to the police station. When the practitioners refused to cooperate, the officers dragged and carried them there. Ms. Sun's uncle and her 73-year-old mother were taken to the police station that afternoon. They tried to use her family members to force Ms. Sun to stop practising. The police told her that if she agreed to write a guarantee statement to stop practicing, she would be allowed to go home with her mother. Ms. Sun refused to comply. That night, Zhang Qinghai, head of the police station, shocked her with an electric baton while shouting, “You still want to practise?” Sheng, a police instructor, held Ms. Sun on the ground and stood on top of her. Sheng and Zhang continued to shock Ms. Sun with two electric batons for a long time. They would not let her stand or sit and ordered her to lean down with her weight pressing on the back of her legs. When she asked to use the toilet, Zhang told her to go in her trousers. Ms. Sun was left handcuffed throughout the night.
Officers from the city police department came to videotape Ms. Sun the next morning. She refused to cooperate and did not face the camera. After the recording, officer Sheng kicked her twice and pulled clumps of her hair out with his hands. Ms. Sun and other practitioners were taken to the city police department that afternoon. They were then taken to the Criminal Team in the evening, where Zhang Lianqun and another officer, also with the surname Zhang, interrogated them. They deprived the practitioners of sleep for 48 hours and then transferred them to a detention centre.
Ms. Sun was given a two-year sentence on July 9th, 2001, and taken to the Dalian Forced Labour Camp.
Arrested Again and Tortured, Ms. Sun Dies
When Ms. Sun was on her way home on the morning of June 23rd, 2009, after working in the fields, Wang Xuanfu and plainclothes officers from the Harbin Road Police Station, Pulandian City Police Department, and the Jiahe Police Station followed her. They found her house key and forcibly searched her home. The officers confiscated copies of Falun Gong lectures, a computer, printer, DVD burner, and many other personal belongings.
Ms. Sun was taken to the Harbin Road Police Station and transferred to the Yaojia Detention Centre that afternoon. Ms. Sun was held at the detention centre for over 50 days, and her family members were not allowed to visit her.
She was sentenced to two years in Masanjia Forced Labour Camp in Shenyang City on August 14th, 2009. The guards brutally tortured her and forced her to remain in strenuous positions for long periods of time. She was also handcuffed and punched in the face. The guards made her listen to slanderous propaganda about Falun Gong.
Ms. Sun was diagnosed with excess fluid in her abdomen in March 2010. In order to avoid being held responsible in the event of her death, camp officials released Ms. Sun on April 20th, 2010.
Officers and prison guards who personally participated in the torture of Ms. Sun include Zhang Jun, Zhang Huan, Zhang Zhuohui, Zhang Lei, and Fang Yehong, among others.
