Ms. Li was arrested by officers from the Haidian District Police Station on December 29th, 2009, at Haidian Book City. Haidian Court officials tried her in July 2010. Ms. Li's lawyer entered a non-guilty plea for her but the court still sentenced her to three years in prison.
Ms. Li appealed to the Beijing Second Intermediate Court, but the court did not hold a hearing, instead sending two judges to go through the motions by having a conversation with her in October 2010. Beijing Second Intermediate Court then upheld the original sentence in response to her appeal in November 2010.
Ms. Li was held in the Haidian Detention Centre for nearly 14 months. While detained there, she was subjected to physical abuse and mistreatment.
