Ms. Bi is from Dongbu Village, Yulindian Town, Yantai City in Shandong Province, but has been living in Chengbei Village since she married Mr. Zheng Jikun. Mr. Zheng started to have problems with his memory in the early 1990s. He went to the Muping District Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine and was told that there was a breakdown of tissue in his brain. As his condition worsened, he went to the Yuhuangding Hospital, where he was diagnosed with conduction aphasia, an acquired language disorder, usually a result of damage to the top left side of the brain. The couple used up all of their savings and incurred a lot of debt to pay for medical expenses, and Mr. Zheng had to quit his job as a result of his health problem.
After the couple started to practise Falun Gong in 1998, Mr. Zheng's health started to improve and the illness soon disappeared. Mr. Zheng also found a job at a nearby construction site.
When the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) began persecuting Falun Gong on July 20th, 1999, Ms. Bi was arrested in June 2002 while she was on the way to her mother's home. She was sent to Wangcun Forced Labour Camp in Zibo City two months later. Mr. Zheng then had to take care of his 80-year-old mother and 12-year-old daughter by himself. When Ms. Bi was sentenced, his health started to deteriorate and he felt a tremendous pressure in his head. He couldn't see properly to read and had trouble using his limbs.
Mr. Zheng moved his family back to his hometown in Yulindian Town, where they had to seek the support of relatives and neighbours to survive.
Ms. Bi was released after one year of persecution in the labour camp. She had to work hard in order to support the family as Mr. Zheng's health continued to deteriorate. He passed away in April 2004, and his mother died the following year.
