Qinghua University alumnus Zhang Lianjun was paralyzed and received brain damage as a result of torture by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). He was incarcerated in the Fourth Prison of Chifeng on July 25th, and recently completed eight years of wrongful imprisonment. During his imprisonment, he was only allowed to lie in bed, day and night. He was transferred to a hospital, and held under close surveillance by CCP officials. His family was also monitored and followed by unidentified officials.

Zhang Lianjun is 36 years old. He was a Civil Engineering student at Qinghua University. He was arrested in 2003 by Beijing Domestic Security Division police. Forced to stay in an environment with absolutely no humanity, Mr. Zhang protested by going on a hunger strike. He was subsequently tortured, and was in critical condition. Around August 2003, Beijing Domestic Security Division officials sent Mr. Zhang to the Beijing Police Hospital to undergo brain surgery. The so-called surgery was in fact, torture. His brain's nerve cells were damaged and he became incontinant. He became emaciated while in the Beijing Police Hospital. For days and nights, he just laid in bed, not knowing if he was hungry or thirsty. He couldn't stand, sit, nor turn his body. A catheter was inserted in his bladder in order to collect the urine; hospital staff had to help him defecate. He couldn't respond to anyone attempting to talk to him. He was in a lethargic state all day long, without clear consciousness. Even in this condition, he was sentenced to eight years of prison by the CCP Court. For details, please see article “Falun Gong Practitioner Mr. Zhang Lianjun, a Qinghua University Alumnus, Has Eight-Year Sentence Extended” (http://clearwisdom.net/html/articles/2011/8/10/127387.html).

On July 25th, the fourth prison of Chifeng was surrounded by police vehicles and officers. The prison forbade Zhang Lianjun's family to pick him up, but instead, they arranged for Mr. Zhang to be taken to a van. That day, officials from the Taipingdi Village Political Judiciary Committee, the 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) and local Neighbourhood Administration Committee were also present.

Zhang's family arranged for treatment in the Chifeng City Hospital. Currently, he is in the surgical area of the 16th floor of Chifeng City Hospital. The medical costs amount to almost 1,000 yuan1 daily. The Zhang family is not wealthy, and the medical costs are unbearable. Mr. Zhang's parents felt extreme grief and indignation after watching their lively son become so tragically impaired, as a result of his persecution. His family requested explanations from the Political Judiciary Committee, the 610 Office and related departments. At this time, there is no sign of resolution.

Currently in Taipingdi Village, Mr. Zhang's family is closely monitored and followed. Mr. Zhang's hospital room is surrounded by unidentified officials 24 hours daily.

Internal messages disclosed that various personnel “visited” Mr. Zhang in the hospital, including officials from the Chifeng Political Judiciary Committee, Chifeng 610 Office, Songshan District Political Judiciary Committee, Songshang District 610 Office, Taipingdi Area Political Judiciary Committee and 610 Office, and the local Neighbourhood Administration Committee.
