Senior Nurse Arrested Again after Being Tortured in Labour Camp Twice

Ms. Wang Lu, 48, is a former senior nurse at the Bengbu City No. 3 Hospital in Anhui Province. Her home was ransacked soon after she went to Fuyang City to celebrate the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival (September 12th) with her father. She went to the Linquan County People’s Hospital on September 14th, preparing for the admittance procedures and to look after her older brother who suffered a cerebral haemorrhage. However, the Bengbu City police, in collusion with the officers from the Linquan Domestic Security Division, followed and arrested her. She is currently being detained and persecuted in Bengbu City.

Ms. Wang was put into a labour camp twice after the communist regime began the persecution of Falun Gong in July 1999. She was first arrested and tortured in 2003, and her right knee was injured by the police. She did not receive any medical treatment, but was sentenced to two and a half years in the Hefei Women’s Forced Labour Camp.

In 2008 Ms. Wang was arrested again and sentenced to a year and a half in the Hefei Women’s Forced Labour Camp. She was so severely tortured that her hair and eyebrows turned white, she suffered a loss of hearing, and she lost sight in both eyes. Although her eyes, hair, and eyebrows basically recovered by studying and reciting the teachings of Falun Gong, her hearing was still very poor.

Labour camp officials extended Ms. Wang’s term in the labour camp. When she was supposed to be released again, the officials colluded with the Bengbu City 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) and transferred her to a brainwashing centre. She was not released until her family paid bail.

After Ms. Wang was released, the hospital officials didn’t allow her to keep her job due to threats and pressure from the 610 Office and the police department. Ms. Wang explained the facts about Falun Gong to the officials, and they arranged for her to work as a laundress in the washhouse. She earned only 800 yuan¹ per month. However, in order to avoid the authorities’ constant threats and pressure, the hospital officials finally forced her to retire early, giving her only between 1,000 to 1,200 yuan a month.
