Rome, 19th October

China: The HandsoffCain organization calls for a discussion on China’s human rights’ issues and the persecution towards the Falun Gong practitioners.

19th October 2001, Rome: 68 US Senators urge President Bush to bring up Teng Chunyan’s case during his meeting with the Chinese President Jiang. Teng Chunyan is a Falun Gong practitioner. She holds an American passport and has been detained in Beijing. Over 100,000 signatures on a release petition letter were handed to President Bush.

Yesterday, the Chinese Foreign Office claimed that a US company in Beijing received a Falun Gong book which was suspected to contain anthrax. No details were given by the Chinese officials regarding the exact source of the anthrax virus.

This, however, may just prove to be another case of the Chinese authorities fabricating rumours to sabotage the reputation of the Falun Gong practice. In fact, a few days ago, the “South China Morning Post” [newspaper] reported that China has made good use of the excuse to fight international terrorism, to further suppress the Falun Gong group, as well as other spiritual groups, claiming that they were terrorists.

Madam Elisabetta Zampurati from HandsoffCain said, “Faced with such stupid tricks by the Chinese government, the Italian Parliament must discuss as soon as possible the case of supporting the persecuted Falun Gong practitioners, drafted by the Parliamentary Vice President, Biontti. We always say that we need to be careful when criticizing such a big market.
But now people have realized that it is now time for market economy to show more respect to global democracy.
