Mr Zhao Guoan, was a 55 year old Dafa practitioner in Luohe City, Henan Province. Because Mr. Zhao kept telling people about Falun Gong, he was sent to Xuchang City No. 3 Labour Camp by the police on August 7, 2003. Four months later, his family was notified by the labour camp that Mr. Zhao had died of a "heart attack." When his wife, Ms. Zhang Guirong, insisted on seeing his body, she was greatly shocked by what she saw.

Mr. Zhao Guoan lived in Wuyang County of Luohe City, Henan Province. On May 23, 2003, the police from the Political Security Section of Wuyang County Police Department ransacked his home and took him and his wife to the Wuyang County Detention Centre. In both the police department and the detention centre, the couple resisted the persecution and kept telling the people they met about the truth of Falun Gong. After three months in prison, Mr. Zhao Guoan was sentenced to forced labour, and was sent to the Xuchang City No. 3 Labour Camp on August 7, 2003.

On August 14, 2003, Ms. Zhang Guirong was released from the detention centre. However, on November 27, she was forced to go to a brainwashing centre run by the Yancheng Party School in Luohe City. After being detained there for over a month she was notified of her husband's death. They took her to a hospital and the doctor there said, "Zhao Guoan died from heart failure. It was a heart attack. He died after 8 am on December 29, 2003." The people from the labour camp also told her that Mr. Zhao died of a heart attack after 7 am. Ms. Zhang Guirog didn't believe them and requested to see his body.

When she did, she was shocked. She opened up her husband's shirt, and she saw no skin from his jaw to the neck. It was completely peeled off. There was a bloody square about 10 cm by the right side in the middle of his chest, without skin and flesh. There was a long, deep cut about a thumb's-width on his shouders and arms. The cut went over to his back, with no skin, and the flesh was ulcerated deeply. His ears, the back of his neck, his back and the whole lower abdomen were dark purple, his lower limbs were all swollen and both feet were swollen and shiny. There were two very thick, deep cuts above his ankles, as if they were tightly bound at one time. On top of his head and above his forehead there was a red spot. There were bruises and cuts all over his body.

After seeing all of this, Ms. Zhang Guirong questioned the police loudly and exposed the clear fact: Mr. Zhao Guoan was in fact tortured to death. However, she was dragged away immediately.

After the cremation of Mr. Zhao's body, the authorities gave his family 7000 yuan and then said nothing. The police from the labor camp said, "He was too stubborn and wouldn't cooperate with us, so we locked him up in a small cell. [1] He was like this after only 3 days." More details of this case are to be investigated. We hope that the people who know the truth can provide us with information and names of the perpetrators. We are determined to investigate it to the end and bring the criminals to justice.

[1] A torture method in which the detainee is locked up in a very small cell individually. The guards handcuff practitioners in a fixed position, in which the practitioners can neither move nor lie down. The small cell is very damp and no sunshine comes in. Detainees have to urinate and defecate in the cell. Only half of a regular meal is served to those locked up in a small cell during the daytime. Often there are vermin, such as rats, in the cells. The stench is so bad that it is difficult to breathe.
