Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Yan Xiangzhi lived in a village near Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province. After she went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong on January 1, 2000, she had to go into exile to avoid being persecuted. On January 13, 2002, personnel from a police station again arrested Yan Xiangzhi and her husband. After being illegally detained for one day and a night, Ms. Yan Xiangzhi was released. Her husband was sentenced to six years in prison and sent to Jidong Prison in Tangshan City.

In prison, Yan Xiangzhi's husband was severely tortured and began to suffer from leukemia, gallstones and other illnesses. His life was endangered. On September 15, 2003, he was sent home, but the authorities often went to his home to harass and threaten him and Ms. Yan. On September 15, 2004, they vowed to arrest the couple again. Under the huge pressure of such threats and her husband's failing health, Yan Xiangzhi fell unconscious and passed away on August 15, 2004.
