Mr. Luan Ning was recently sentenced to four years in prison in the Xixia District in Yinchuan City, Ningxia Prefecture. Mr. Luan is currently appealing to a higher court.

Some time ago, while Mr. Luan was employed as a deputy director of the Ningxia Region Human Resources Department, he went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong. He was later sentenced to three years in prison and was fired from his job.

On September 19th, 2008, nine policemen together with two Neighbourhood Administrator personnel from Xixia District, stormed into Mr. Luan's home; arrested him, then ransacked his home.

While Mr. Luan was standing trial at the Xixia District Court on February 24th, 2009, personnel from the Ningxia Region Political the Judiciary Committee and the 610 Office1 were guarding the courthouse as if they were expecting an attack from a formidable enemy!

The whole building was surrounded by numerous policemen and many police vehicles could be seen patrolling the streets. In addition, dozens of security policemen pried open the locks to some practitioner's homes and made six arrests.

The court tried to control the outcome of the trial by allotting only five seats to the general public. When it was Mr. Luan's turn to defend himself, judge Li Jieli broke judiciary protocol by interrupting him over and over again, making it impossible for him to properly defend himself. When the court adjoined, the judge refused to announce a verdict.

The mental and emotional anguish that Mr. Luan's mother endured during her son's long term imprisonment proved to be too much for the elderly lady and she passed away on February 27th, 2009.

The prison authorities would not even permit Mr. Luan to attend his own mother's funeral.

Note

1. "The 610 office" is an agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong, with absolute power over each level of administration in the Party and all other political and judiciary systems.
