A survey conducted in 1999, shows that over 70 million Chinese citizens were practising Falun Gong. Every morning hundreds of thousands of people practised the exercises together in the square and in the parks. Jiang Zemin launched a nationwide campaign to suppress Falun Gong. Since then, Falun Gong has been banned in China and over 50 thousand practitioners have been arrested with over 10 thousand practitioners being sent to forced labour camps. It is estimated that over two thousand practitioners have been tortured to death.
