Jiang Zemin, persecutor of his own people, has been indicted in the US federal courts for crimes against humanity, with the heinous and shameful charge of Genocide. He has deserved this for his unleashing, since 1999, of a terrible persecution of Falun Gong practitioners, the disgraceful cruelty of which will, in due course shame him before history and the whole world. He has, via his notorious "610 office" set up exclusively to persecute Falun Gong, tortured and brutalised thousands upon thousands of innocents, often unto death. He has shown not a single sign of remorse toward his victims who have included pre and post natal infants and of course their mothers and fathers, as well as the elderly and all ages in between. Indeed with cold disdain, and despite China having signed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, he has taken the attitude that other countries should simply mind their own business! He has ordered the physical, mental, sexual, social and spiritual torture of those whose only "offence" was to seek to do 5 meditative exercises before going about their daily business through which they sought to live by the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance! In his drive to eradicate Falun Gong he has also slandered, pressurised and tried to intimidate practitioners of all the nationalities in the 50 or more countries (China being but one) where Falun Gong is practised. He has tried this with a propaganda campaign both at home and abroad, the low cunning of which is historically unmatched. He has hoodwinked his own people with these lies and effectively made it illegal for them to be good!
Now he is starting on the West. Such is the very meaning of this Article 23 being forced upon Hong Kong by Beijing.
The latest red herring, in the form of some minor revisions to the proposed law is designed merely to hoodwink the ordinary person with a false show of giving ground. These revisions do not give any ground at all in real terms. It will hardly be any more trouble to Beijing with them as without them. They may have even been planned in advance to recuperate anticipated public objection. This can not be put past Jiangs regime, going on their past performance. Such minor changes will not in any respect assuage the fundamental objective which is as sinister as it is impudent. That objective is to acquire, by the back door, (hardly even by the back door, more like the side!) a blank cheque to oblige Hong Kong to override the basic human rights of her citizens to assembly, belief, association and expression.
The legislation threatens to open yet another door kept tightly shut until now. This door opens to the gradual exportation to the West of a grave threat to universal human rights at a time when China is simultaneously seeking dominion in the world markets. Once open , how can it be shut? Whilst major economic power still remains here, supporting opposition to Article 23 is pivotal to the protection of the hard won basic freedoms that we have come to take for granted.
We need to stop taking them for granted. We need to cherish them and to step forward in defence of them. This situation is not an oriental issue. The persecution of innocence in China has a direct bearing on every persons future position. The World Economic forum last year stated that to avoid global economic collapse we need to do business at every level with honesty, tolerance and mutual consideration, in short - ethically. The principles upheld by Falun Gong and which Jiang and his cronies seek to destroy, of Truth, Compassion and Forbearance, exactly meet this need. The fit is perfect, like the missing pieces of an ancient puzzle. Whatsmore, these priciples are not merely ideals but rather the real and substantial solution. Contrast this with the *final solution which we are so chillingly reminded of by Jiangs diabolical abuses.
*The reference final solution is a usage from that period in history that humanity swore never to allow to re-occur which was the genocide committed by Adolf Hitler against the Jews. I was reminded of it one day last year, indeed I almost felt a Star of David (a stigmatising badge every Jewish person was forced to wear during the Nazi tyranny) burning on my chest. On that day I, a European citizen, was forcibly prevented from walking through the Brandenburg Gate, as others walked freely on, because I wore a yellow scarf with the words Falun Dafa (another name for Falun Gong) embroidered along its edge. I, a lone female, was bullied and my passport removed from me by German security police who, to their credit, were visibly ashamed of their own conduct. The reason? It offended the president of the Chinese communist party who was staying in an hotel across the road!
