Dear [name removed]:
Thank you for contacting me to express your views on the case of Charles Li, an American citizen from Menlo Park, California, who was recently detained in China. I appreciate hearing from you and welcome the opportunity to respond.
I understand the concerns raised in your letter. I have reviewed the information regarding Mr. Li's detention and have closely examined State Department reports on his health and living conditions at the Yangzhou Detention Center.
I have raised Mr. Li's case with the acting governor of Jiangsu Province, Liang Baohua, and the head of the Jiangsu Provincial Public Security Bureau, Pei Xizhang, urging them to review the case and inform me of the charges and circumstance surrounding his arrest.
Please know that I understand the seriousness of the situation and will continue to closely track any developments in Mr. Li's status.
Again, thank you for your letter. I hope you will continue to write me about issues that are important to you. If you have any additional comments or questions, please feel free to contact my Washington, D.C. staff at (202)224-3841.
Sincerely yours,
Dianne Feinstein
