A Dalian City resident died seven months after she was released on medical parole.
Ms. Cheng Fuhua was arrested on June 1, 2015 for talking to people about Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline being persecuted by the Chinese communist regime. She was tried without her family’s knowledge and later given 3.5 years in prison.
The 68-year-old woman was abused while held at the local detention centre. She went on a hunger strike to protest the mistreatment, only to be subjected to various forms of retaliation.
Ms. Cheng developed oedema and had frequent fainting episodes. She also lost mobility. The local detention centre notified her family in late January of this year to pick her up.
The release on medical parole came too late. Ms. Cheng was never able to recover from her abuse-induced symptoms. She died on August 6, 2016.
Ms. Cheng’s family is calling on insiders to provide information on her abuse in detention.
