The detention centre told Changming's family members that they could visit him on February 15th 2003, if they brought 1000 Yuan as a payment [500 Yuan is the average monthly income for an urban worker in China.]. However, the visit was cancelled after his family members handed in only 200 Yuan, which was all the money they could find.
On March 1 2003, Changming's family members received a notice from the detention centre telling them that Changming was sick and that they should come and pick him up. Changming was not ill. What had actually happened was that the supervisor, unspeakably evil Yang Chunming, and police officer Yang Wenbing had frantically stabbed at his head and body with screwdrivers after covering him up with something. When they stopped, Zhang Changming's head was severely injured, with large bruises and internal bleeding, and he frequently vomited blood. Seeing that he was already on the verge of death, even the hospital refused to accept him, not wanting responsibility for his death.
At around 3:30 pm on March 2 2003, the detention centre staff took Zhang Changming home and tried to extort 500 Yuan from his family, but they did not have any money. Changming continued vomiting blood and bleeding from his many wounds after arriving home. Unable to eat or speak, he sadly died at 7:30 pm the same day. His entire back was blue, his legs shrunken, his chest, jaw, and right hand all covered in large bruises. There was still blood coming out his mouth the day after he died. His family has been under surveillance ever since.
