It was recently learned that a man imprisoned for his faith died in custody more than one year ago.
Mr. Jin Junbo was arrested in February 2014 for putting up flyers bearing information about the Chinese communist regime's persecution of Falun Gong, a mind-body practice based on the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. He was initially sentenced to 12 years in prison, but the sentence was reduced to 9.5 years upon his appeal.
Mr. Jin was ordered to serve time at Dongling Prison. He was tortured so badly that one side of his body was paralyzed. The prison authorities not only refused to render him proper medical attention, but also ordered inmate Zhang Mingguang (later released in December 2017) to torture him.
Around December 2016, the prison sent Mr. Jin to Shenyang 739 Hospital when he suffered a brain hemorrhage, stomach bleeding, and other symptoms. They also tried to coerce his sister into paying up to 30,000 yuan in exchange for his medical parole.
A friend of Mr. Jin's visited the hospital on January 2, 2017 but was told that he had been discharged a few days prior. The friend learned later that Mr. Jin had been moved to Dongling Prison Hospital.
News broke recently that Mr. Jin died in the prison hospital in March 2017. He was 56.
Mr. Jin is not the only innocent life lost in this prison. Mr. Zheng Shoujun, another Falun Gong practitioner, was admitted to the prison on August 6, 2008 and died 13 days later. His family noted that his head was swollen and deformed, his abdomen protruded, and his hands were mangled. It was apparent that he had been severely beaten and tortured.
