A Huludao City, Liaoning Province, resident died on August 7, 2020, three years after he was released from serving a ten-year term for practicing Falun Gong, an ancient spiritual and meditation discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since 1999. He was 48.
Mr. Zhang Chongyue was arrested early on the morning of February 25, 2008. The police broke into his home before he got up. His computer, printer, and other personal items were confiscated. He was detained at the Suizhong County Detention Center.
The police returned to his home three days later when no one was around and took away all valuable items,.
Mr. Zhang was tried by the Suizhong County Court over the course of two days, May 12 and 13, 2008, and sentenced to ten years in prison.
He was detained at Jinzhou Prison for three months, before being transferred to Panjin Prison.
Mr. Zhang was subjected to constant torture in Panjin Prison. He developed high blood pressure and became very weak and emaciated. He had difficulty walking and often felt dizzy. Yet the prison refused to release him on medical parole.
In 2012, Mr. Zhang was transferred to the Shenyang No.1 Prison and continued to be tortured. He was released on August 24, 2017, six months before the end of his term.
His wife had struggled over the past ten years to make ends meet while taking care of their two daughters and her mother-in-law. Mr. Zhang's death dealt another great blow to his family.
