On January 3rd, 2003 of the Chinese lunar calendar, the county "610 Office" and Police Station officials concealed the truth. They forcefully pulled Zhang Dewen (Zhang Dezhen's elder brother) into a car. In addition, Liu Changbo, the head of Jiuzhai Village Police Station, loudly scolded the fellow villagers who witnessed what was happening. The chief of the "610 Office" forced Zhang Dewen to sign the "death report" of Zhang Dezhen by cursing, terrifying, deceiving, and threatening him.
Upon her death, the police did not allow Zhang Dezhen's family to hold a farewell ceremony for her, but cremated her corpse that same night in order to eliminate the criminal evidence. Zhang Dezhen's body was in terrible shape: she was holding her head with her two hands, her legs were badly bruised, and many of her teeth were missing. Under her body there were several packages of bloodstained toilet paper. The school she served at bought a suit of clothes for her, but since her body was so stiff from rigormortis, they couldn't put them on so they just used them to cover her.
