After the height of the Tang dynasty, women's clothing gradually adopted a loose and wide style. During the middle and late Tang dynasty, this style became even more popular; the sleeves of the common woman's costume were often as wide as four chi (about 1.33 m). The photograph shows a robe that is closed in front with a long skirt and a shawl, which was typical clothing for women in the middle and late Tang dynasty. This costume, together with golden flower hairpins, was also known as "fine hairpin and dress".
In the Tang dynasty, women usually wore various corollas, most made of silk gauze. Later on, wearing real flowers, especially tree peony, became popular. One's style of dress indicated one's social status.
Practitioners extensively researched the dress of the ancient world in order to reproduce it accurately for musical fashion shows that provide a glimpse into the peak of China's long cultural history.
